Holzbunge offers two circular walks of different lengths, with different estimated times and difficulty levels. This makes it easy to plan a day of hiking: one route is longer and rated moderate, while the other is shorter and rated easy. Choose according to the time available and the level of challenge you want, and you have two clearly distinct options.

Circular walks to suit your day

The Bistensee Circular Walk starts in Holzbunge and follows a circular route of about 12 kilometres through the landscape between Duvenstedter and HĂĽttener Berge. The moderate route is estimated to take about three hours. It follows minor roads and forest tracks, with scenic views along the way.

The second circular walk also starts in Holzbunge. It is about 10.5 kilometres long, takes around two hours and is rated easy. Its route passes through and around the village, along hedge-lined paths and through woodland. Compared with the Bistensee Circular Walk, it is approximately 1.5 kilometres shorter and takes about an hour less, based on the estimated figures; it is also rated easy, in contrast to the other route’s moderate difficulty.

The smokehouse and local architecture

One cultural highlight is the Holzbunge–Neu Duvenstedt route: one of its landmarks is a thatched smokehouse in Holzbunge. This traditional Low German timber-framed hall house is considered one of the best-preserved smokehouses in Schleswig-Holstein in its original form. Its architecture offers a different focus from the two walking routes: here, attention turns not to route length and difficulty but to a distinctive example of rural architecture. This cultural theme complements the options for anyone interested in architectural history as well as walking routes.

Woodland landscapes between Bistensee and Holzbunge

The “Wälder der Hüttener Berge” Natura 2000 site comprises three smaller deciduous woodland areas between Bistensee and Holzbunge. The wider landscape is characterised by ancient beech forests and alder-ash swamp forests. This is a broader landscape context than the forest tracks and woodland sections found along the two circular routes. The distinction is useful when choosing a route: the sections of trail describe the routes themselves, while the woodlands and forest types help place the landscape between the two villages in context.

In the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde region

The 180-kilometre Nature Park Trail passes through all four. These regional figures are on a different scale from Holzbunge’s two circular walks. If you are planning to explore beyond the local routes, you can consider the Nature Park Trail and cycling network as separate attractions of the district.
