The bathing area at Bistensee is a welcoming place to relax and swim. If you prefer exploring on foot, you can follow the Bistensee circular walking trail to discover the village and, later, the lakeshore. Check the local conditions before swimming.
Walking between the village and the lake
The circular walking trail passes through Bistensee and later runs directly along the lake. There are several secluded spots and bathing areas along this stretch of the shore. The route therefore takes in both the village and the lakeshore. Trail conditions may vary with the seasons, so bear this in mind when planning your walk.
The route offers a different perspective from a stay spent only at the bathing area: it first leads through Bistensee and later to the lake. Those interested in the trail can experience the village and the lakeshore as distinct parts of the circular route, without needing to set a specific walking time.
Lake, valley and reed belt
Bistensee covers an area of about 1.54 km². The lake formed during the Weichselian glaciation. As the glacier retreated, it shaped the present-day valley and left behind moraine landscapes. The lake’s geological origins and the shape of the valley are thus both part of Bistensee’s landscape history.
The natural environment also includes a prominent reed belt, which provides shelter for many birds during the breeding season. Alongside the open water, the reeds are another notable feature of the lake: at a particular time of year, they offer birds a place of refuge.
Swimming, fishing and getting out on the water
Boating on Bistensee is permitted year-round unless the lake is frozen. Weather-related and safety restrictions still apply. If you want to use your own boat, sailboat, surfboard or kayak, you must check with the relevant authority on a case-by-case basis. So, boating on the lake is subject to conditions, and the use of privately owned watercraft must also be arranged in advance.
To fish in Bistensee from the shore or from a safe boat, you need a valid official fishing licence. Fishing permits for Bistensee are available from Torsten Jarck at the campsite in Bistensee. As this is a practical point of sale, it is best to check in advance whether permits are currently available there.
Draw well and farm history
As a point of interest, the Bistensee circular walking trail passes a historic draw well with a water-lifting mechanism. A draw well uses such a mechanism to raise water from the well, so you will also encounter a piece of local engineering history along the trail. The well adds a specific historical landmark to the route’s natural attractions.
Another trace of the past is linked to farming: Bright Lake Ranch is located on the oldest farmstead in Ahlefeld-Bistensee. Records of the farmstead date back to the end of the Middle Ages. This offers a different kind of historical reference from the draw well on the circular trail: here, the focus is on the long history of a farmstead.
