Dörnick lies between the Great Plön Lake, the Schwentine and the Karperbeek. Nine tenths of the municipality’s area lies within a landscape conservation area. These two defining features shape the character of the place: the bodies of water determine its geographical setting, while the conservation area covers a large part of the municipality. Those choosing Dörnick for a trip can therefore focus on the landscape as well as traces of the village’s history.

Landscape and Getting Around in Dörnick

Several designated cycling routes pass through Dörnick in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. They offer a concrete local reference for anyone planning a trip around cycling routes, while the nature park provides the wider landscape setting. The approach also helps with orientation: from Federal Highway 430, the route follows the Schwentine through Dörnick and Karpe towards the Langenrade Sventana windmill. The mill lies just beyond the municipal boundary in Ascheberg. This route links the river, the place names Dörnick and Karpe, and a destination outside the municipality.

Local History in the Village Landscape

Dörnick was first mentioned in official records in 1460. In the village centre near the village green stands a historic fire station with a hose-drying tower dating from 1927. The dates mark different historical reference points: 1460 is the first mention of the village, while 1927 is the year the tower was built. Restored thatched cottages and the former village school are also part of the village landscape. They complement the fire station with further traces of the village’s architectural history, bringing local history to life in several buildings.

In the Wider Destination of Plön

Beyond Dörnick, the view widens to the wider destination of Plön and Plön District. The district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. Around 80 lakes are located within the district. These include Great Plön Lake, covering 29 square kilometres, and Selent Lake, covering 22 square kilometres. The approximate total conveys the variety of bodies of water; the area figures make it possible to compare the sizes of two individual lakes.

Large parts of the district belong to the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, which covers 75,000 hectares. Lakes, gentle hills, extensive forests, fields and moors shape this landscape. Activities here include paddling, swimming, hiking, cycling, hill walks and birdwatching. The nature park’s attractions can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by canoe. This offers a wider choice of nature experiences than the specific local connection provided by the cycling routes that pass through Dörnick.

In Plön itself, water, culture and short distances come together; attractions, nature experiences and Great Plön Lake are all close by. Shady avenues in the castle park invite you to stroll. Guided tours are available at Plön Castle or the Baroque Prince’s House. The historic castle nursery has a collection of old trees. A 5-Lake Cruise from Plön to Malente offers another view of the lake landscape. If you plan to take this cruise, check the current timetable in advance.
