The Ostenautal Route passes through Struckum and by historic front doors; individually designed façades give the ride a tangible architectural focus. Another option associated with Struckum is the 45-kilometre Söbenbargen Cycle Tour. It takes you through marshland and geest landscapes and past historic burial mounds and front doors. The Fortuna Mill is a photographic highlight along this route.
Cycling between façades and landscapes
The routes have different focal points: the Ostenautal Route is notable for its route through the town itself and its façades. The Söbenbargen Tour stands out for its length and its landscape and history themes. If you plan to ride either route, check the current signage and route locally; waymarking and conditions on the Söbenbargen Route may change.
The Fortuna Mill and trips in the surrounding area
The Fortuna Mill is a protected historic monument. Built in 1806 in the Kellerholländer style, it is privately owned. A popular photo subject, it complements the view of the individually designed front doors with a single, datable building. This lets you explore Struckum’s architectural themes at different scales: along a route, with its individual façades, and at the mill, with its recorded year of construction and architectural style.
Excursion options from Struckum include the nearby LĂĽttmoorsiel bathing area in Beltringharder Koog and ferry trips from Nordstrand into the island and Hallig landscape of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. These offer different experiences: spending time at a bathing area or travelling by water towards the islands and Halligen. Check current bathing conditions, ferry services and seasonal offerings when planning your trip.
North Frisia as a wider region
The wider destination of North Frisia extends beyond Struckum’s local cycling and architectural highlights. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is also part of the national park. A rich variety of birdlife can be observed at Hauke-Haien-Koog.
There is also a wider regional context for cyclists: the 27-kilometre Beltringharder Route starts in Lüttmoorsiel. It is a separate regional tour and should not be confused with the Söbenbargen Cycle Tour associated with Struckum. The Schlüttsiel Information Centre offers insights into nature through an exhibition and almost-daily guided tours on the Wadden Sea and nature conservation; in suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dyke follows. For culture enthusiasts, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments of any district in Schleswig-Holstein.
