In Ostenfeld (Husum), historic traces, traditional cheesemaking and a long-distance cycling loop come together. St. Petri, the Ostenfeld dairy and the Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route offer different points of reference when choosing a destination. The wider destination of North Frisia also provides a regional context of its own.

St. Petri: two historical periods

St. Petri in Ostenfeld dates from 1772. The church contains a baptismal font from the 12th century, described as part of the area’s long human history. The two dates refer to different elements: the church and the older baptismal font. Those interested in historic buildings and their furnishings will therefore find two distinct points of reference in time. Visiting arrangements may vary; check access in advance.

Cycling route and cheesemaking in Ostenfeld

Ostenfeld is listed as a location on the Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route. The 165-kilometre long-distance cycling loop passes through meadows, wetlands, gentle hills, and beech and oak forests. The distance refers to the loop as a whole and is a different planning unit from a visit to an individual place. Check the route and signs before setting off.

The Ostenfeld dairy is a family-run business that makes cheese using traditional artisanal methods. This is a distinct local attraction alongside the church and cycling route. If you plan to shop there, bear in mind that the product range and opening hours may change.

North Frisia as a regional context

The wider destination of North Frisia stretches from the coast to islands, Halligen and the Wadden Sea. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, a distinctive landscape formation in the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

Culture is also a prominent theme at the regional level: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. For nature and landscape topics, the Schlüttsiel Information Centre offers a natural history exhibition as well as guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a tour of the sea dike follows. National park information centres in North Frisia also offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

Nature experiences and regional routes

The Hauke-Haien-Koog is one example of a place in North Frisia where visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife. The 50-hectare Hallig of SĂĽdfall lies in Protection Zone 1 of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and has a largely natural landscape. It can only be visited on guided tours: on guided walks or with the Wadden Sea carriage drivers. This access restriction is an important part of planning a visit.

For cyclists, two other North Frisian routes differ in length and starting point: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel; the 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck-Haus. The Eiderstedt Countryside Tour also passes through North Frisia’s expansive marshland. It offers quiet roads, nature and glimpses of rural life, with cows and sheep.

Those interested in regional food culture can try Pharisäer in northern North Frisia: hot coffee with a dash of rum and a topping of whipped cream, one of the region’s classic specialities.
