Those considering Munkmarsch as a place to stay will find a village shaped by its harbor, marshland and Wadden Sea. The Natura 2000 management plan locates the small harbor at the northern end of the FFH area; the village lies above the steep coast. Around Munkmarsch, the main options are walks through the coastal and tidal landscape. The landscape, water sports and traces of the former ferry harbor give the village several distinct sides.
Beach, bay and landscape
The East Beach lies on Sylt’s eastern side in a sheltered bay. This small stretch of beach has fine sand and offers expansive views, including of Rantum Harbor. Those wishing to make the beach the focus of an outing will find a compact stretch of coast here; the view of the harbor also extends across the bay.
The White Cliff of Braderup lies between Munkmarsch and Braderup. It is a viewpoint and a starting point for walks. This offers two different landscape experiences: at East Beach, the bay, sand and view of Rantum Harbor take center stage; at the cliff, the focus is on views and walks. There are also more opportunities for walks through the coastal and tidal landscape around Munkmarsch.
Harbor and water sports
Munkmarsch Harbor is now a private marina and a popular destination for recreational sailors. Several hiking and cycling trails that lead through Sylt’s landscape are nearby. Calle’s Beach, home to the island’s oldest water sports center, is right next to the harbor. In Munkmarsch Bay, Calle Schmidt offers surfing and sailing lessons in catamarans and dinghies. As course availability may change, check whether a course is running on your chosen date before making plans.
The Sylt Sailing Club is also part of the local water sports scene: a youth sailing group meets at the club in Munkmarsch. The club has acquired Optimist dinghies, dinghies and a Hobie Cat 16 for its young members. The equipment may change.
Ferry harbor, mill and Liar’s Bridge
Until the Hindenburg Dam opened in 1927, Munkmarsch Harbor served as the gateway to the island for travelers from the mainland. It lost this role when the dam opened. The historic ferry house still bears witness to the harbor’s heyday. There is also a mill to see in Munkmarsch. Together, these places add a historical dimension to the coastal landscape.
The small Liar’s Bridge lies between Munkmarsch and Keitum and can only be reached on foot from either village. It keeps your feet dry during floods. Its name comes from a story about its unstable predecessor: according to the tale, it was once supposed to collapse if children lied while crossing it. The bridge thus combines a practical purpose with a local legend.

The Wadden Sea path between Munkmarsch and Keitum is a 7.56-kilometer, flat jogging route rated as moderately difficult. Its distance, profile and rating provide concrete points of reference for planning; route conditions may vary with the weather. The two destinations raise different considerations: for the Liar’s Bridge, its location between the villages and access on foot matter; for the Wadden Sea path, consider its distance, difficulty and the weather.
