Drelsdorf offers two distinct ways to shape your stay: the Traditional Costume Museum focuses on Frisian everyday culture and archaeological finds, while cycling, hiking and riding trails outside the village lead through meadows and fields, the state forest and along the Ostenau River. The Schirlbusch Nature Reserve, a nearby forest with a fitness trail and the outdoor swimming pool round out the options. You can plan cultural history and outdoor activities as separate priorities. It is worth checking in advance when visits and seasonal offers are available.
Traditional Costume Museum, Finds and Church
The extensive local history collection at Drelsdorf Traditional Costume Museum has been assembled since the 1950s and is spread across nine rooms. It includes traditional costumes and Frisian domestic culture from the 17th to the 19th century, as well as jewellery and older household items. One room, preserved almost in its original form, contains a historical chest dating from 1699. Check visiting arrangements before your trip.
There is also a small archaeological collection of artefacts from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. The finds include the northernmost Neanderthal finds, among them a hand axe. In the village, insights into traditional clothing and domestic life sit alongside evidence from much earlier periods.
The local dance and traditional costume group is also part of the cultural tradition. It performs German and international folk dances. Drelsdorf’s traditional costumes were reconstructed based on local research and historical illustrations, and were first presented to the public at a harvest procession in Drelsdorf in 1984.
The church in Drelsdorf is a Romanesque fieldstone church, built around 1200. Its Renaissance altarpiece dates from the late 16th century, bringing two markedly different periods of art and architecture together in one building. Visits can be arranged in advance with the church office.
Nature, Trails and Activities
The Schirlbusch Nature Reserve lies to the northeast of Drelsdorf. It is known for its distinctive flora and fauna. Cycling, hiking and riding trails lead through meadows and fields, through the state forest and along the Ostenau River. A nearby forest also has a fitness trail.
The Traditional Costume Museum is a short detour from the Ostenau Valley Route. If you plan to use the route, you can make the museum a separate stop; check visiting arrangements in advance. An old railway embankment near Drelsdorf is a reminder of the area’s past along the Ostenau Valley Route.
Drelsdorf has an outdoor swimming pool. Check whether it is open seasonally. The outdoor options therefore vary not only by activity: trails invite you to cycle, hike or ride, while the swimming pool offers a separate opportunity to swim.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
To travel by public transport, take a regional train to Husum, then bus 1031 from Husum ZOB to Drelsdorf. Check the current timetables before travelling. Visits to the church must be arranged in advance; check visiting arrangements for the Traditional Costume Museum beforehand, and bear in mind that the swimming pool is seasonal. Planning these details early will help you shape your stay around the visit and activity options that are actually available.
