For a stay in Almdorf, two natural attractions can be distinguished: walks in the forest and the experience of the tides on the North Sea. When choosing accommodation, this distinction can help you decide what matters most to you.

Forest and tides around Almdorf

The Haaks, a forest east of Almdorf, covers around 96 hectares and offers opportunities for long walks. This named woodland is therefore a focal point for longer walks in the local natural surroundings.

The North Sea is only a few kilometres away. There, visitors can experience the tides in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Forest walks and the tides are different nature experiences; when planning your stay, you can consider which is more important to you.

Islands and Halligen are also part of the wider regional context. Ferries depart for them from regional piers such as Ockholm-SchlĂĽttsiel and DagebĂĽll. Check the ferry timetable before travelling. This makes a boat trip a separate option to plan alongside walks in Almdorf.

North Frisia on a larger scale

Looking at North Frisia as a wider travel destination reveals an extensive coastal region: North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an officially protected natural area and is part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

The Hauke-Haien-Koog is a regional destination for nature watching, where visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife. Another special feature is the Hallig of SĂĽdfall. It covers 50 hectares, lies in Protection Zone 1 of the national park and has a largely natural landscape. SĂĽdfall may only be visited as part of guided tours, either on guided walks or with the mudflat carriage drivers.

The SchlĂĽttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. The combination of an exhibition and a guided tour offers a way to learn about both nature and its protection.

Cycling, boats and culture in the region

There are several locally described routes to choose from for cycling tours in North Frisia. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour starts at the Amsinck-Haus in Reußenköge and is 35 kilometres long. Comparing their lengths highlights the different distances of the two routes; their stated starting points also differ. The North Sea Cycle Route passes through the region and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. North Frisia can also be reached by bicycle via the international long-distance Grenzroute.

For boat trips, excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. These trips differ from the ferry services that run from regional piers such as Ockholm-Schlüttsiel and Dagebüll to islands and Halligen. If you are planning a boat trip, check its timetable before travelling.

Culture and regional specialities also complement North Frisia’s natural attractions. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. In northern North Frisia, Pharisäer is one of the classic specialities: hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream.
