Ahrenshöft combines a distinctive trace of village history with opportunities to explore the surrounding Geest on foot, by bike or on horseback. The village is also a good base for day trips to North Sea beaches and the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. This lets you combine local activities with destinations in the wider region.

Village History and the Geest

The preserved Dörpskroog in the village centre is the building of a former village inn dating from the early 20th century. It was built in 1900 after a fire. The historic bakery associated with the Dörpskroog is considered evidence of the village’s historic infrastructure. The inn and bakery thus point to different aspects of village life in the past: an inn in the centre and a bakery as part of local provisions.

The landscape around Ahrenshöft also offers different ways to explore actively. Hiking, cycling and riding are among the activities available in the Geest. Signposted routes and maps help you discover local features and sights. When planning your day, you can take into account both your preferred activity and route signs and maps for orientation.

From Local Paths to North Sea Excursions

Ahrenshöft is also a starting point for day trips to North Sea beaches and the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. For a ferry trip to the North Frisian Islands and Halligen, the ports of Schlüttsiel, Nordstrand and Dagebüll are possible departure points. Ferry services depart from those ports, not from Ahrenshöft. If you are planning such an excursion, check the timetable for your chosen port and date.

This brings together different scales of planning: activities in the surrounding Geest and excursions to destinations on the North Sea or in the Wadden Sea. The regional excursion option does not indicate the departure point for a particular ferry trip; you choose that by selecting a port.

North Frisia: Coast, Halligen and Nature

The wider travel destination of North Frisia opens up a broader coastal landscape: North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. Sylt, Föhr and Amrum are among the five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, a distinctive landscape formation within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

For insights into the natural environment, the Schlüttsiel Information Centre has an exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dyke follows. Visitors can observe a diverse birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Access to the Hallig of Südfall is subject to a special rule: it can only be visited on guided tours, either on guided walks or with mudflat horse-drawn carriages.

There are also regional cycling routes with clear differences in length and starting point. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour covers 35 kilometres; it starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House. The “Eiderstedter Landpartie” cycle tour takes you through the wide marshland of North Frisia and offers quiet paths, nature and glimpses of rural life with cows and sheep. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”.

The Pharisäer is part of northern North Frisia’s culinary heritage: hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream. It is one of the region’s classic specialities. This regional theme complements the nature and cycling options without being tied to a particular place.
