Getting here and finding your way around the region

Neumünster is located in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein. Rail routes from Hamburg to Kiel and Flensburg run through the city; Neumünster is also described as a central transport hub in northern Germany. The city is also considered a starting point for day trips and regional exploration: the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, major attractions in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg city centre are all reachable within an hour. This means travel planning can include attractions in the city as well as destinations across the region.

Wildlife park and nature destinations

Neumünster Wildlife Park is set in 24 hectares of woodland and is home to more than 700 animals from around 85 species. The paths between the enclosures are suitable for wheelchair users. A large adventure playground adds to the wildlife park; professionally guided tours, themed programmes and workshops focus on animals, nature and species conservation. Alongside the enclosures, visitors can choose from guided activities centred on wildlife and nature conservation.

Dosenmoor is considered the largest and best-preserved raised bog in Schleswig-Holstein. It covers 521 hectares and has retained its original extent in full. There are circular trails and benches in the northern part, and an educational trail runs along a boardwalk. These trails and stopping points provide visitors with practical guidance in the bog.

A nature outing continues differently at Lake Einfeld: an eight-kilometre circular route is suitable for walking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling. The beach on the eastern shore offers opportunities for swimming and beach volleyball. The two nature destinations therefore also differ in the activities they offer: Dosenmoor to the north has circular trails and an educational trail, while the lake has a named circular route with several activities as well as a beach.

Art, textile history and events

Villa Wachholtz presents changing exhibitions of contemporary painting, graphic art, photography, sculpture and video art. Its programme therefore spans several forms of visual art. The villa also has a bistro-café with a garden terrace.

The Museum Tuch + Technik takes visitors through 2,000 years of textile history. Visitors can try out some of the exhibits themselves. In contrast to the villa’s changing exhibitions of contemporary art, the museum focuses on the development of a particular craft over a long period. The two cultural attractions therefore have different emphases: contemporary artistic expression at one, and textile history and selected hands-on exhibits at the other.

The Holstenhallen provide up to 14,000 square metres of contiguous usable and exhibition space. They host international equestrian events and the NordBau trade fair. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates before making plans. This allows you to schedule a visit to the exhibition halls around a particular event, while the wildlife park, bog, lake and museums offer other possible interests during your stay.
