A stay in Kücknitz offers different ways to explore the area, from landscapes and nature education to the district’s industrial and architectural history. This is interesting if you are looking for more than just one attraction and would like to focus on nature and culture according to your interests. Places to explore include Mühlenbachtal, environmental education, the Herrenwyk Industrial Museum and St. John’s Church.

Landscape and trails

The “Kücknitzer Mühlenbach and Söhlengraben” landscape conservation area extends through the Lübeck districts of Kücknitz, Rangenberg and Siems and comprises four separate sections. It therefore extends beyond Kücknitz: Rangenberg and Siems are also among the districts named. For orientation, it is helpful to think of the conservation area as a larger landscape that consists of several sections.

A specific route through Kücknitzer Mühlenbachtal is described as a cycling and hiking trail. It connects Kücknitz and Rangenberg and links to the district centre at Kücknitzer Kirchplatz. The route description therefore connects a trail with a named destination in the district centre. If you are planning a trip, it is a good idea to check the current condition of the trail.

Nature and environmental education

The “Schafberg Dummersdorf” nature experience area is home to a nature kindergarten and the environmental education centre. The Dummersdorfer Ufer Landscape Conservation Association offers environmental education and public outreach, including guided tours and excursions for children and adults. A nature garden invites visitors to linger and provides a habitat for many endangered insects.

Nature here means more than landscapes and trails: environmental education, guided excursions and habitats for endangered insects each offer a different focus. If you would like to learn about nature not only as a landscape, but also in terms of education and habitats, there are several ways to explore it here. The association’s guided tours and excursions are a dedicated offering for children and adults.

Industrial history and the church

The Herrenwyk Industrial Museum is located in Lübeck-Kücknitz, in the former company store of the blast furnace works, on the edge of the workers’ settlement built in 1906/1907. Its permanent exhibitions explore life and work in Herrenwyk, the industrialisation of Lübeck and the Flender shipyard. They also address the fate of forced labourers and prisoners of war in Lübeck’s industry. The permanent exhibition “Life and Work in Herrenwyk” presents the history of the works.

These themes span the history of a factory and the working and living conditions in Lübeck’s industry. If you are interested in these social aspects of industrial history, the exhibition topics give you a clear overview of the museum’s main areas of focus.

St. John’s Church in Kücknitz offers a different way to explore history. Lübeck building councillor Carl Mühlenpfordt designed it in the then-popular Heimatschutz style; it was consecrated on 27 November 1910. The church’s architectural history thus adds another aspect of local history to Herrenwyk’s industrial story. The consecration date and the information about the workers’ settlement place both themes in the early 20th century.
