Schilksee brings together the history of Kiel’s sailing competitions with art and landscape conservation along the beach. If you choose a destination not only for sailing but also for its local history, design and landscape, you will find several different points of interest here. The Olympic Center, the clock tower on the beach promenade and the sculpture park in the grounds of Gut Seekamp represent different aspects of the area’s local and cultural character.

Olympic Center and Kiel Week

The foundation stone for the Olympic Center in Schilksee was laid in 1969 in connection with the sailing competitions of the 1972 Olympic Games in Kiel. This sequence of years places the center’s origins in the context of Kiel’s sailing competitions and gives local history a specific timeframe.

As an official national training center of the German Sailing Association (DSV), the Olympic Center adds an institutional sailing role to this historical connection. Those interested in sailing will therefore find a link both to the Olympic Games and to the work of the association.

Kiel Week also has a specific connection to the area: its event grounds are located at the Olympic Center in Kiel-Schilksee. If the event is the reason for your trip, check the dates and current information about the grounds before making plans. Arrangements may change from one edition to the next.

Art on the beach promenade and in the sculpture park

Alwin Blaue’s clock tower stands on the beach promenade in Schilksee. It rests on a roughly four-meter-high pillar made of roughly hewn granite blocks, into which various maritime animal motifs have been incorporated. A clock-shaped block sits on top. The material, approximate height and motifs provide several specific design details.

If you are interested in public art, you can take in the granite form and the animal motifs incorporated into this piece together. The clock tower thus combines a clearly recognizable design with a maritime theme, without the connection to sailing history having to be the sole focus.

Another connection to art is the sculpture park in the grounds of Gut Seekamp. Works by sculptor Hans Kock can be viewed there. While the clock tower centers on a single object with specifically described components, the sculpture park features works by a sculptor. If you are interested in sculpture, you can include these works as a focus in your plans.

A route with several stops

A route in Schilksee is approximately three kilometers long and includes five stops. If you prefer to plan for several stopping points rather than choose just one attraction, you can take this scale into account. The approximate length and number of stops provide two specific points of reference for the extent of the route.

Beach and landscape conservation

Schilksee beach and its surroundings are part of the “Between Heischer Tal and Schilksee Cliffs” landscape conservation area. If you would like to include the beach surroundings in your choice of destination, alongside sailing and art, this protected-area designation is a distinct aspect of the area’s profile. It complements the cultural and sporting themes with an expressly stated landscape designation.

By bus to the Olympic Center and sailing center

Bus routes 12, 13 and X30 currently serve the Olympic Center. From Kiel Central Station, the sailing center can be reached on routes 30S, 501 and 502. Search for connections to your specific destination and check the timetable before departure, as bus services may change.
