Aumühle offers several ways to enjoy a stay: a former watermill by the mill pond, trails in the Sachsenwald forest, and insights into Bismarck and railway history. The Eisvogelweg starts at Aumühle station and leads to the Billetal valley; other attractions focus on museums, rides or nature.

Mill Pond and Bismarck History

The Fürst Bismarck Mühle, a former grain watermill first documented around 1350, stands by the mill pond in Aumühle. As a grain mill, it represents an earlier use of water for grinding. The year marks its first recorded mention and serves as a historical reference point for the town.

Bismarck’s history is also presented from different perspectives. The Otto-von-Bismarck Foundation preserves unique documents on Bismarck’s political work in Aumühle’s historic railway station. The Bismarck Museum in Friedrichsruh displays historical objects, including a reconstruction of his study with original furnishings. The documents and personal belongings thus offer two different ways to explore the subject. As exhibitions may change, it is worth checking the latest visitor information before planning a specific visit.

Forest Trails, the Bille and Horse Riding

The Sachsenwald is a contiguous forest covering around 70 square kilometres in Schleswig-Holstein. The Bille and its tributaries run through the forest, and trails invite visitors to enjoy a relaxing outing. From Aumühle, the Eisvogelweg passes several scenic spots: it starts at the station, goes past the mill pond area, follows the Bille and reaches the Billetal nature reserve.

The Max-Schmeling-Weg offers a different kind of route: this 6.05-kilometre trail is an easy circular walk that passes the historic Marstall and the Bismarck Museum. The routes therefore differ in layout: the Eisvogelweg runs from the station along the Bille to the Billetal, while the Max-Schmeling-Weg is a loop. Those wishing to include horse riding will also find more than 48.4 kilometres of riding routes in the Sachsenwald. The Sachsenwald Riding School in Aumühle teaches children to ride.

Railways and Butterflies

At the Lokschuppen Aumühle Railway Museum, visitors can explore locomotive cabs and see changing exhibitions in a former S-Bahn carriage. Groups can arrange guided tours, as well as rides on a handcar and a light railway, outside regular Sunday opening hours. These are not fixed daily activities: on event and family days, visitors can try a 1920s handcar or take a short light railway ride. Check the relevant dates and group options when planning your visit.

The Friedrichsruh Butterfly Garden offers a very different experience. Its tropical greenhouse covers 450 square metres and is home to more than 1,000 butterflies. The grounds offer space for walks, play and outdoor relaxation. From central Hamburg, take the S7 S-Bahn to Aumühle station; from there, it is a 1.8-kilometre walk through the Sachsenwald to the butterfly garden. The Sachsenwald can also be reached by taking the S21 S-Bahn to its terminus in Aumühle or by bus 333. Check current connections before travelling.

Dining Near the Station

The Fürst-Bismarck Mühle restaurant near Aumühle station serves dishes made with regional and seasonal produce. Its seasonal cuisine complements the range of forest trails and cultural attractions. When planning your stay, you can consider visit dates and the trails you want to take as separate elements, without needing to combine them into a set itinerary.
