Extensive cycling tours shape the tourist profile of the Südermarsch around Marne. These include rides in the direction of Neufeld Harbour; along the way, you’ll find inns, farm shops and rural cafés. As a result, breaks and stops along the route are just as much a part of this region as cycling itself. If you’re planning a trip with longer cycling tours, this focus is a useful guide when making your decision.

Cycling Tours and Geographical Orientation

Marne is about six kilometres from the Wadden Sea in Schleswig-Holstein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This approximate distance gives you a geographical reference for the town’s location. Together with the cycling tours in the Südermarsch, it helps you place Marne in the context of both your own cycling plans and the wider landscape.

Ride a Rail Bike on the Old Marschbahn Railway

Another cycling experience takes you along a ten-kilometre section of the old Marschbahn railway between Marne and St. Michaelisdonn. Visitors can ride a four-person rail bike there. The route passes through marsh meadows and by wind turbines on the west coast. While the SĂĽdermarsch is known for extensive cycling tours, the rail-bike ride offers a clearly defined route with a specific distance.

The rail bike is available from May to September. Check the season and departure times before your trip so you can plan around the rides on offer.

Culture and Nature in the Wider Destination of Dithmarschen

In the wider destination of Dithmarschen, cultural and nature-related attractions complement the cycling options around Marne. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of Dithmarschen’s history, from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum network also brings together 19 museums, run by professional and volunteer staff, across eleven locations. This offers a broad view of regional museum work without any one museum visit having to represent the whole stay.

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers a different way to explore the past through hands-on activities. These include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, lighting fires and baking bread. The programme may vary; if a particular activity is important to you, check the current schedule in advance. The Albersdorf Stone Age Forest is next to the park. This approximately 40-hectare, natural outdoor site includes nine original archaeological monuments and is permanently free to access. If you’re planning a visit, check the access information again.

Hiking and the Wadden Sea are also part of the wider region. Near Lunden, the easy 12.79-kilometre circular route “Mötjensee and Sea Eagle” passes through the area. The first stage of the Kiel Canal Hiking Trail is on a different scale: it runs through Dithmarschen, is just under 40 kilometres long and is part of a long-distance hiking trail with five stages in total, from Meldorf to Kiel. Comparing the two helps you choose between a circular route and a stage of a longer-distance trail.

Guided walks along the Dithmarschen coast offer another way to explore the Wadden Sea. National Park mudflat guides with local knowledge and subject expertise lead the tours; at low tide, the diverse life of the mudflats becomes visible. Tides and guided tour times vary, so factor both into your plans. One information centre in the wider destination is the Friedrichskoog National Park Station, a facility with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbour.
