Two different hiking themes take centre stage in Hundsgrün: the Vogtland Knollensteig as a circular trail, and Stage 4 of the Vogtland Panorama Trail, with its views and named stops. On the Knollensteig, the start and finish are at Hundsgrün railway station. The Panorama Trail stage, by contrast, runs from Oberhermsgrün and Ebersbach towards the Hundsgrün viewpoint and then through the forest. When planning an outing, you can therefore first choose between a circular route and a stage with its own sequence of places.

Circular Hiking Trail and Panorama Trail

The Vogtland Knollensteig is 17.41 kilometres long. This circular hiking trail starts and finishes at Hundsgrün railway station. From the station, the trail runs through the forest along the Elster Valley towards Unterwürschnitz. Its length, circular route and shared start and finish point give the hike a clear structure; the forest section along the Elster Valley adds to the character of the route.

Stage 4 of the Vogtland Panorama Trail runs from Oberhermsgrün and Ebersbach towards the Hundsgrün viewpoint. It then continues through dense forest via the Lochhäuser and the Lochbach. The panorama extends as far as Hoher Stein in the Czech Republic and Wirtsberg. While the Knollensteig is defined by its circular route and stated length, this stage is distinguished by its sequence of places and views of the two named destinations.

Local History and Church Heritage

Hundsgrün was first mentioned in 1414 as Hudisgrune and Hundczgrune. Its church history also has a clearly defined timeframe: from 1582 to 2001, Hundsgrün belonged to the parish of Oelsnitz. The historic Bamberg–Regensburg–Naumburg/Zeitz border of the three bishoprics lies within Hundsgrün’s boundaries. It represents the village’s significant ecclesiastical and regional history.

The “Tour of the Stones” includes three artistically designed stone steles in the “Loch” area of Untereichigt. They commemorate the pre-Reformation significance of the “disputed parish” of Eichigt. Together with the historic border, they offer different points of interest for anyone who is also interested in church and regional history while hiking: a border story on Hundsgrün land and a memorial to Eichigt.

Potato Theme: Monument and Tasting

A potato house serves as a monument to the origins of potato cultivation some 375 years ago, in connection with the Vogtland Knollensteig. Near Hundsgrün, the Wilfert Farm Stay in Unterwürschnitz offers potato tastings by prior arrangement. The potato theme therefore takes two different forms: as a historical motif associated with the hiking trail and as a tasting that must be arranged in advance.

Getting to the Railway Station

Vogtlandbahn trains run on the Zwickau–Plauen–Adorf–Cheb route to Hundsgrün. If you plan to arrive by train, check the current timetable for the specific connection for your visit. Free parking is available at the station in Hundsgrün, near the B 92. The station is therefore relevant both as the start and finish of the Knollensteig and as a reference point when arriving.
