Seehausen offers two distinct reasons to stay: its historic buildings and the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds, which extend into the district. When planning your trip, the first thing to consider is its purpose: would you like to focus on the history of the area, or are you attending an event in one of the exhibition halls? This distinction directs your attention either to historical topics or to the trade fair and how to get there.

Local history at the church, boundary stone and Ratsgut estate

The small chancel tower church was built in the 13th century from rubble and fieldstones along what was then an important salt road. The Baroque pulpit altar was created around 1700, and the church was renovated again in 2008. This building therefore brings together several historical periods: its medieval construction, Baroque furnishings and a more recent renovation. If you are interested in architectural history, this sequence offers a concrete glimpse into the church’s development over several centuries.

Station 111 Markstein (boundary stone) bears a different historical trace. Its inscription reads “Station/MARKSTEIN/der/Kön. Sächs./Triangulirung/1865” (“Station/BOUNDARY STONE/of the/Royal Saxon/Triangulation/1865”). It refers to the Royal Saxon triangulation; 1865 appears as part of the inscription. Seehausen thus brings together different historical records: the church’s architectural and furnishing history, and the triangulation to which the boundary stone refers.

The historic buildings also include the Stiftsgut estate of the City of Leipzig, also known as Ratsgut Seehausen. It comprises two barns, two stable buildings, a former distillery and paved areas, and is significant to the local and architectural history. The names Stiftsgut of the City of Leipzig and Ratsgut Seehausen refer to the same estate, not to two different places. Unlike the church, a single building with several historical layers, this site brings together different building types and paved areas.

Leipzig Trade Fair grounds and cycling route

The Leipzig Trade Fair grounds extend into the Seehausen district. The exhibition halls are used for trade fairs, congresses and major events. If you are travelling for an event, its specific purpose gives you a different planning focus from the area’s history. Check the date of your event and take the fairgrounds into account when planning your stay.

The fairgrounds can be reached directly from Leipzig city centre via a cycle path. Bicycle parking is available at all visitor entrances and at the service entrance to the Congress Center Leipzig. If you would like to include cycling in your journey, you can take the route and the listed parking locations into account as practical planning details.

Choose the focus of your stay

For a trade fair visit, the event date and journey to the grounds are key planning considerations; if you are interested in cultural history, the area’s various historic sites take centre stage. If you plan to cycle, you can include the direct route from Leipzig city centre to the fairgrounds in your travel plans. This way, you can base your search on the kind of stay you actually have in mind.
