The castle grounds, with their moat and park, define the center of Belgershain. St. John’s Church and the local history room add to the area’s historical character; the Leipzig Green Ring also passes through the town. This brings together local history, church architecture and cycling as distinct reasons to visit. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the castle and local history or on a stage of the circular route. The town also has its own railway station and connections to rail lines, providing practical information for your journey.

Castle Grounds, Church and Local History

The castle grounds developed from a moated castle built in the 11th or 12th century, surrounded by a moat. The castle hall has been extensively renovated and is used for a variety of cultural events. Belgershain Castle and manor house are significant to local history and architectural history. The grounds thus combine an early fortified complex with their present-day role as a cultural venue. The moat and park are also among the features that make the castle grounds a defining part of the town center.

St. John’s Church was consecrated on St. John’s Day in 1686. The Schmeisser organ in the church dates from 1905 and was reconstructed in 2008, including its case. These dates mark distinct chapters: the church’s consecration in the 17th century and the organ’s reconstruction in the 21st century. For those interested in cultural history, the organ is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the architectural and local history of the castle grounds.

The Belgershain local history room is located on the first floor of the municipal office, next to Belgershain Castle. Its local history exhibitions and documents cover archaeological finds, farming and crafts, as well as the railway station, church, school and sports. The subjects range from material finds and work to public institutions and local life. The Belgershain Local History Association also maintains a town chronicle and collects and presents documents and objects related to local history.

The local history room has seasonal opening hours from May to October: on the first Tuesday of each month, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Visits outside these hours are possible by prior arrangement. Please arrange access before your visit.

Cycling Route and Getting There

The Leipzig Green Ring is a circular route that can be started at any point and passes through Belgershain. The route is fully signposted and includes distance markers. This means you can choose Belgershain as your starting point instead of having to find a designated start location. Signposts and distance markers help you plan your trip and identify the section you have chosen. If you enjoy cycling, the Green Ring offers a specific route to explore; the castle, church and local history room add a distinct cultural and historical dimension.

Belgershain has its own railway station on the Leipzig–Chemnitz line; it is also connected to the Leipzig–Geithain line. Check current connections before planning your journey. This lets you combine your rail journey with a stay in the area, without assuming a particular travel time for the circular route or the sights.

Park and the Regional Natural Environment

The park surrounding Belgershain Castle is a lovely place for a walk in fine weather. This offers an opportunity to spend time outdoors alongside cycling and cultural and historical activities. In the wider region, the Rohrbach Ponds are known beyond the municipality as a recreational area and nature reserve. At the municipal level, the FFH (Special Area of Conservation) site “Rohrbach Ponds and Göselbach” (number 225) includes land within the municipality of Belgershain.

A regular event with a clearly defined audience is the seniors’ afternoon at the castle: since 2016, the Belgershain-Heimat und Geschichte e. V. association has organized and hosted it monthly, on the second Wednesday of each month. The event is for older adults.
