In Oderwitz, mill history, trails through the countryside and a wide range of visitor attractions come together. Two signposted mill circular trails offer a clear choice for your stay: you can plan one loop or combine the routes. Other highlights include the viewpoint at Spitzberg, attractions related to weather and technology, and opportunities for exercise and swimming.
Mill circular trails and living history
The four-kilometre Mill Trail links Berndt Mill and BirkmĂĽhle. The five-kilometre route passes Neumann Mill and continues to Berthold Mill. The two circular trails can be combined into an 8.7-kilometre route. This gives you a choice of two separate trail lengths or a longer combined route; the mills you pass differ depending on the route. Mill visits are possible by prior arrangement.
Mills also shape the village beyond the circular trails: Oderwitz has three well-preserved post mills and the still-operational Berthold Mill, a former watermill powered by electricity. Berndt Mill is the oldest of the Oderwitz post mills; it was erected at its present location in 1787. Anyone interested in the history of mills will find not only the buildings here, but also a tangible link to the past.
Panoramic views, climbing and trails
At 510 metres high, Spitzberg offers panoramic views over Upper Lusatia and Bohemia from its viewing rock. The rock is also a recognised climbing area. The viewpoint and climbing offer two different ways to enjoy the same place. For a longer exploration of Oderwitz and the surrounding region, you can take the Upper Lusatian Mountain Trail or the Upper Lusatian Zittau–Bayreuth Cycle Route.
Another way to explore the region is the 112-kilometre Upper Lusatian Umgebinde House Route, which includes Oderwitz. It adds the architectural heritage of Umgebinde houses to the mill theme. Together, these trails offer different ways to tailor your stay to your interests: walk one of the mill trails, take in the scenery at Spitzberg or follow one of the regional routes.
Activities for different seasons
The summer toboggan run in Oderwitz is open in both summer and winter. The public swimming pool has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers. Facilities include a slide, a three-metre diving tower and a one-metre springboard. The Oderwitz Weather Centre offers something different: its weather talks introduce visitors to weather observation and forecasting.
The Erfinderkiste hands-on learning workshop offers more than 300 square metres of play space. Children explore the world through sight, hearing and touch, and learn about the laws of nature in a playful way. The programme also includes children’s birthday parties and afternoon sessions for groups. If you are planning a specific visit, check the options currently available. The various attractions cater to different interests, from physical activity to hands-on learning.
Crafts and technology
At the Otto demonstration bakery, visitors can watch bread being baked in an original wood-fired oven. It is located in the Umgebinde house of Feinbäckerei Otto in Oderwitz. Technology enthusiasts can also see a digitally controlled model railway measuring 45 metres in length, which includes a garden railway. The two experiences are quite different: one focuses on baking in a historic building, the other on a large, digitally controlled model railway.
