An original 1920 apartment, harvest tools ranging from the flail to the combine harvester, and a cycle route right along the Elbe offer different ways to explore Zahna-Elster. In Zahna, the focus is on agriculture and churches; in Elster, the Elbe, ferry and promenade add to the mix. Bülzig offers its own distinctive feature with a sculpture park. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Museums in Zahna and Elster

The Zahna Farming Museum features an original apartment from 1920 in a four-sided farmyard; the farm’s residential building dates back to 1730. The collection includes tractors, harvesting machinery, a preserved blacksmith’s forge and agricultural equipment from past centuries. The development of grain-harvesting technology is a theme in its own right: the exhibition traces the story from sickle and flail to combine harvester. The museum thus brings together insights into domestic life, agricultural work by hand and the technological development of harvesting.

The Elster Museum of Local History, Carnival and River Shipping is divided into three themed areas. Its exhibits cover shipping, the Elbe ferry, carnival, domestic life and the Elbe community; a local chronicle complements these themes. Compared with Zahna’s agricultural focus, Elster turns the spotlight on life by the river and local festive traditions. The two museums therefore appeal to different interests: agricultural equipment and technology in one, shipping, community and local history in the other.

Churches and their architectural history

St Mary’s Church in Zahna is a Romanesque cruciform church. Churches preserved in this form are considered extremely rare. Concerts are also held at Zahna Protestant Church; specific dates may vary. The foundation stone of Elster Protestant Church was laid in 1867, and the church was consecrated in 1871. Leetza’s first church, a fieldstone church, was built around 1200. The Romanesque cruciform design, the 19th-century building and the early fieldstone church each offer a different architectural and historical perspective.

Bülzig Sculpture Park

Bülzig Sculpture Park brings art together with an open landscape. The roughly 20-hectare meadow includes the Bülziger Graben and small wooded areas. Since 1993, it has featured angel sculptures made of wood, metal and other materials. The artworks are integrated into the landscape and invite visitors to look, touch and reflect. Unlike the thematically organized museum collections, the focus here is on the sculptures and their relationship with the landscape.

Cycling routes and walks along the Elbe

In Elster, the Elbe Cycle Route runs right along the river. The Elster ferry connects the sections of the cycle route on the left and right banks between Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Torgau. Check the current ferry service before setting off. Elster’s landscaped riverside promenade can also be explored on foot; local access conditions may change. The cycle route and promenade offer different ways to experience the Elbe.

The Berlin–Leipzig Cycle Route passes through Zahna and crosses the Fläming region. Its total length is approximately 250 kilometers. The route uses dedicated cycle paths, hiking trails, low-traffic roads, and field and forest tracks. The approximately 250 kilometers refer to the entire route; the section through Zahna is part of this longer journey. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different types of paths and the overall route in mind.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation

If you are looking for a hotel in Zahna-Elster, first decide which visits matter most to you: the farming museum and churches offer a focus in Zahna, the Elbe Cycle Route, ferry and promenade in Elster, and the sculpture park in Bülzig. Then compare the location details of the hotels you are considering with the places you plan to visit. This will help you choose accommodation that fits your own itinerary.
