Ziegenhagen can be explored through two distinct themes: the remains of Cygenberg Castle, dating from the 11th century, and the wooded Nymph Pond west of the village. A visit to the castle involves a climb and views towards the Werra Valley; at the pond, nature watching meets its former use as a water source for the glassworks. To get to Ziegenhagen Adventure Park, you can travel via the A7 or by bus or on-call shared taxi.

Getting to Ziegenhagen Adventure Park

Ziegenhagen Adventure Park is about 3.5 km from exit 75, Hann. Münden/Hedemünden, on the A7. You can also reach it by bus or on-call shared taxi from Gertenbach or Witzenhausen Nord. The “Ziegenhagen Freizeitpark, Witzenhausen” stop is about a three-minute walk from the entrance. If you travel by public transport, check current connections in advance, as routes and services may change.

Cygenberg: Castle Remains and Views

The remains of Cygenberg Castle stand on a steep sandstone cliff between Ziegenhagen and the Wald-Märchen-Zoo Ziegenberg. A roughly half-hour uphill walk from the lower village leads to views towards the Werra Valley and the surrounding uplands. Both the castle remains and the climb are therefore part of planning a visit to this destination. Check the path conditions on site before setting out.

The Nymph Pond and Birdwatching

The Nymph Pond lies west of Ziegenhagen, near Glashütte, and is surrounded by forest. It was originally created to supply water to the former glassworks. Wild ducks, rare waterbirds and grey herons can be seen there; individual sightings cannot be guaranteed. The pond’s former use and today’s opportunity for birdwatching give this landscape two distinct sides.

Witzenhausen as a Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of Witzenhausen, the Cherry Experience Trail explores the cultural landscape around the town. At 17 stops, you can discover its transformation, the importance of cherries to Witzenhausen and the diversity of varieties in a fun, hands-on, multisensory way. The audio tour of the historic old town offers a different focus: it is free, can be followed independently on a smartphone and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Check whether the audio tour is currently available before your trip.

Another way to discover Witzenhausen is the 22-kilometre Cherry Cycle Route. It leads around the town past numerous cherry tree orchards. In spring, thousands of cherry trees cloak Witzenhausen and its surroundings in white and pink. Walks through blossoming orchards, over gentle hills and along the Werra are then a special experience. The cycle route, town walk and Cherry Experience Trail differ in their themes and formats.

The Kesperkirmes also adds its own distinctive touch to the wider travel destination of Witzenhausen. The German Cherry Pit Spitting Championships are held there every year, and visitors of all ages can take part. Check the current event dates and details before your trip, as these may change.
