Visitors looking to combine culture and nature in the Hanseatic Town of Werben can shape their stay in two different ways: with guided tours of local sights or by enjoying outdoor activities in the Elbe meadows and on the Elbe. Stork nests are another attraction, particularly from April to August. So the first thing to consider when planning is when to travel: the time of year affects whether St. Johannis’s regular opening hours, wildlife watching or both take centre stage.

Guided Tours and Church Visits

City tours may include the Elbtor gate and its local history museum, the Salt Church and the stork room in the historic town hall. Additional guided walks may also cover the Baroque Kommandeurhaus, the Köhlerhaus, the court theatre and the Old School. This lets you distinguish between the stops on a city tour and other guided walks when planning. If a particular place is important to you, ask in advance whether it is included in the visit; you should also clarify visitor arrangements and access before you arrive.

St. Johannis is regularly open to visitors from early May to early October, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; group tours can be arranged by appointment. This gives the church its own time slot in your cultural itinerary. It makes sense to plan a church visit separately from city tours: regular visits depend on the seasonal opening hours, while group tours are by appointment.

Elbe Meadows, the Elbe and Storks

If you prefer to explore on land, you can go for a walk or cycle in the Elbe meadows around Werben. There is a canoe rental service on the Elbe for water sports. Each option offers a different focus: in the Elbe meadows, you can choose between walks and bike rides; on the river, you can enjoy water sports by canoe. This lets you decide whether to spend your time on foot, by bike or on the water.

Wildlife watching includes nearly 20 stork nests, which are especially observable from April to August. The number of occupied nests and the birds’ activity vary from year to year. This period is therefore a guide for planning your trip, not a guarantee of a particular sighting. If storks are a major interest, take this variation into account when choosing your travel dates.

The periods overlap from early May to August. April is already within the period highlighted for stork watching, but comes before the regular church opening season begins. September and early October are still within the church season, while the highlighted period for the stork nests runs through August. If both are important to you, the overlap is a useful guide when choosing your dates; bear in mind that stork activity varies from year to year.

When planning your accommodation, your preferred time of year is a good first filter: decide whether the church, wildlife watching or the overlap between the two will determine your dates.
