Ostrau combines a Baroque palace and historic park with musical history, a seasonal nature highlight and a cycling route that passes through the town. To plan your trip, start by deciding what you want to focus on: architecture and the history of the park, winter aconites, music or a cycling tour?
Baroque Palace and Historic Park
Ostrau Baroque Palace was built by Ludwig von Veltheim from 1710 onwards; Louis Remy de la Fosse designed the three-wing complex. The palace is set within the 14-hectare historic palace park. Today, it is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network. The palace and the park’s history thus offer two related but distinct ways to explore Ostrau: the design of the complex and the history of the park.
Church, Cantatas and Culture
The patronage church of St. George is still used by the local congregation of the Evangelical Parish of Ostrau and is also a venue for cultural events. Its musical history includes the revival and recording of the cantatas by Johann Justus Kahle. The church is considered an authentic site of Central German musical history; the cantatas and its inclusion in the “Road of Music” network in 2010 both contributed to this. The church thus adds a distinct cultural perspective to the focus on the palace and park. Another feature is the patronage pew in the palace church, which was converted into an anthroposophically inspired tomb-altar chapel. If a cultural event is the reason for your visit, check the specific date in advance.
Winter Aconites and Seasonal Café Offerings
At the end of February, many thousands of winter aconites bloom golden yellow in Ostrau Park. The flowering time can vary depending on the weather, so if seeing the winter aconites is a priority, don’t treat this period as a fixed calendar date. The palace café’s offerings also vary by season: in summer, it serves homemade cakes, ice cream and refreshing drinks. In winter, the café offers hot chocolate, homemade winter aconite punch, mulled wine and hot buttered pretzels. Offerings are seasonal and may change, so check when making specific plans.
Cycling Through Ostrau
The eastern route follows a quiet local road downhill to Ostrau Palace and Park. This is separate from the approximately 34-kilometre section from Niemberg station to Stumsdorf station. It passes through Kütten, Ostrau, Cösitz, Mößlitz and Zörbig, so Ostrau is along the way, not at either endpoint. The road leading to the palace and the distance given for the entire section describe different parts of the route planning. As road conditions and routes can change, it is worth checking the current route before setting off.
Digital Exploration at the Palace
With the “Mission Classroom” app, you can explore the filming location at Ostrau Palace through various digital stations that guide you through the mission. This combines the palace setting with a digital way to explore. As app availability and programming can change, check what’s on offer before your trip.
