More than 8,700 rose varieties and species, with differences in form, color and fragrance: Europa-Rosarium adds a distinctive touch to a stay in Sangerhausen. The collection is considered the world’s largest rose collection. At the same time, it is a gene bank and a living museum documenting the development of roses from wild species to modern varieties. Two perspectives thus stand side by side: the diversity of individual roses and their development from wild species to modern varieties. Those interested in roses can take note of form, color and fragrance, as well as the range of plants on display.

Historic Architecture and Church Art

The protected historic town center preserves much of its building fabric from the 15th to the 18th century. The town’s historical development has been preserved there almost unchanged. Guided walking tours offer a way to explore the town center and focus on its history.

St. Jacob’s Church is a late Gothic, three-aisled hall church built between 1457 and 1542. Its tower is also striking: it is 61 meters high and leans 1.71 meters to the west. A gilded moon clock adds another unusual detail. Inside is a mechanical organ built by Zacharias Hildebrandt between 1726 and 1728. Its 30 stops and 1,908 pipes offer another precisely quantified insight into the church’s furnishings.

Museums Spanning Natural History and Mining

The Spengler Museum presents local and regional history through an almost completely preserved mammoth skeleton and Neolithic finds. It also features exhibitions on the region’s mining history and geology. Thus, very different periods stand side by side in one museum: finds from the Neolithic, a mammoth, and subjects from more recent regional history.

The Röhrigschacht Museum focuses on the 800-year history of copper shale mining in the Mansfeld mining district. It also shows the physical working conditions miners faced underground. This account of working conditions complements the long history of mining with a concrete look at the conditions in which miners worked.

Walking Routes and Different Highlights

The Hohe Linde circular trail starts and ends at Sangerhausen station and is 10.5 kilometers long. It passes through mixed forest and meadows to the Hohe Linde mining landscape, a mining monument. Its fixed distance and starting and ending point at the station make the route easy to plan.

In the village of Wettelrode, hiking trails connect the Kalmusgrund landscape, the Kunstteich pond, the mining educational trail, and historic mining traces. While the Hohe Linde circular trail is a single route with a specified length and starting point, the trails in Wettelrode bring together several landscape and mining themes. When planning, you can therefore decide whether a measured circular route or a combination of several named themes better suits your interests.

Mansfeld-SĂĽdharz as the Wider Regional Setting

Those who look beyond Sangerhausen to the wider destination of Mansfeld-SĂĽdharz will find further historical and landscape-related themes there. The Luther sites in Eisleben include the houses where Martin Luther was born and died. The area around Questenberg is part of the South Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve and was designated a nature reserve as early as 1927. These examples explicitly place the memorial sites in Eisleben and the protected landscape around Questenberg within the wider regional context.

When choosing what to focus on, the local attractions can easily be distinguished: Europa-Rosarium combines a rose collection with plant history; the historic town center and St. Jacob’s Church offer an opportunity to explore architectural history; and the museums present natural and mining history. For outdoor activity, there is the 10.5-kilometer Hohe Linde circular trail and the thematically connected trails in Wettelrode. Guided walking tours, by contrast, focus on exploring the historic town center.
