Salt is part of Sülldorf’s character, not just its name: the springs connect distinctive geology with habitats for rare species. This makes it easy to give your stay a clear focus—on the inland salt meadows, their wildlife and the trails that explore the area from different perspectives. On foot, by bike or on a seasonal guided tour, you can discover different ways of experiencing this landscape; the local Salt Blossom Festival adds a traditional cultural element to the nature themes.

Salt Springs and Inland Salt Meadows

The “Sülzetal near Sülldorf” FFH area stretches between Sülldorf and Sohlen. Naturally emerging salt and brine springs shape inland salt meadows there, where rare, highly specialised plants and animals can be found. The salt springs originate from rising waters in the underground salt-bearing Zechstein formation and are considered geotopes worthy of protection. Here, geology and habitat go hand in hand: the springs are as interesting for their origins underground as they are for the landscapes they shape.

The insect fauna is also remarkable: the salt sites provide a habitat for halobiontic, halophilic and halotolerant insects; many rare species occur there in stable populations with high numbers of individuals. The three terms describe different relationships with salt. Halobiontic species are bound to saline conditions, halophilic species prefer them, while halotolerant species can tolerate them. This shows that it is not only the presence of salt that matters, but also how species adapt to this distinctive habitat.

Trails and Guided Walks

The local history trail “Inland Salt Sites near Sülldorf” is just under 6 km long and open to everyone. The “Telegraph bike path” offers a different perspective: it leads from the information board in Hohendodeleben to the salt meadows in Sülldorf. The cycle route follows a signposted educational trail with panels about the history, geology and use of brine. For this cycle route, it is advisable to check route conditions and signage before setting off.

The Sülldorf Culture and Local History Association (Kultur- und Heimatverein Sülldorf e.V.) organises guided walks through the salt meadows in August and September. If you would like to include one of these tours in your travel plans, check in advance whether a date falls during your stay. The options offer different points of reference: the approximate length is given for the circular trail, the route is described for the cycle route, and the guided walks take place in August and September.

Salt in Local Traditions

Local traditions include the Salt Blossom Festival, featuring the crowning of the Salt Squire and the Salt Countess. Alongside the natural history of the springs and salt meadows, this adds a cultural tradition whose name also reflects Sülldorf’s connection with salt. If you are considering timing your trip around the festival, check the event date in advance.
