Bad Rilchingen can be explored through two themes: thermal waters and the history of its springs. It also offers religious buildings, an art forum and a regional Saarbahn connection. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether the thermal baths, historic sites or both will be the focus of your stay.

Thermal Baths and Thermal Waters

In Bad Rilchingen, the Saarland Therme offers water attractions in indoor and outdoor pools, sauna infusions, as well as wellness and massage services. The pools are supplied with thermal water from the brine spring in Rilchingen; the water is officially recognised for its therapeutic properties. The thermal baths have around 100 water attractions.

The bookable private spa includes a private sauna, a whirlpool and a couples’ massage. If you would like to plan for this combination, check availability and make a booking in advance. This lets you distinguish between the thermal baths’ pools and sauna offerings and a specifically booked private spa.

Springs and Local History

In 1791, Countess Marianne von der Leyen had a saltworks and a boiling house built in Rilchingen to make use of the water’s healing properties. The surviving spring towers, Viktoria and Augusta, were probably commissioned around 1791 along with the saltworks.

The Mariannen spring supplied Rilchingen mineral water, which was well known beyond the borders of Kleinblittersdorf. Intact springs can still be found in Rilchingen today.

This makes it easy to distinguish the town’s history from its present-day thermal bath offerings. The saltworks and boiling house were part of a historic project; today, the Saarland Therme brings together pools, sauna infusions, wellness and massage services. Anyone interested in the water tradition will find both a historical and a contemporary connection here.

Churches, Chapel and Art

The parish church of St Walfridus in Rilchingen-Hanweiler is a three-aisled hall church in the Neo-Gothic style. It was consecrated on 15 July 1887. The Welfert Chapel survives as a ruin in the Rilchingen-Hanweiler cemetery. The church and chapel ruin therefore represent different forms of architectural heritage: a parish church with a clearly defined architectural style and a chapel that survives today as a ruin.

The Ernst Alt Art Forum is located in the former rectory of Rilchingen-Hanweiler. In the park of the Brothers of Mercy, the old spring towers were symbolically given a scallop-shell stone on the Star Path. These features add an art venue and a waymarker to the town’s history. Together with the church and chapel ruin, they offer different themes to explore during a stay, without suggesting that these places all tell the same story.

Regional Orientation and Accommodation

For regional travel, Saarbahn line S1 connects SaarbrĂĽcken with SaargemĂĽnd. It runs via Kleinblittersdorf, Auersmacher and Hanweiler. The route places Bad Rilchingen within a wider regional context.

The Brothers of Mercy in Rilchingen-Hanweiler offer meals and accommodation for pilgrims on request or by booking. If this option suits your trip, make an enquiry or booking before you arrive.
