In Hüttersdorf, protected landscapes, trails of varying lengths and a long history of the church come together. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on nature and local history separately: at Engelgrund, the wetland habitat and nature conservation take centre stage, while the hiking trails are distinguished by features such as distance and designated difficulty level. The churches tell the story of several historical periods.
Wetland Habitat and Trails Through Nature
The Engelgrundweiher pond is located on the outskirts of the Hüttersdorf district. The adjoining wetland habitat is part of the 32.3-hectare Engelgrund-Girtelwiese Nature Reserve. The pond and wetland habitat are therefore two closely related, but not interchangeable, landscape features: the pond lies on the outskirts, while the adjoining habitat is part of the nature reserve.
The Hüttersdorf Circular Trail runs partly along paved paths through the protected Engelgrund wetland habitat. The word “partly” is important when planning: paved paths do not cover the entire route described. If you are interested in the circular trail, it offers a direct connection to the protected landscape.
Hikes by Length and Difficulty
The 13-kilometre Bach- und Burrenpfad premium hiking trail runs through the Hüttersdorf area. For 1.3 kilometres, the trail passes beneath towering beech and oak trees. These trees have marked the boundary between the Hüttersdorf and Piesbach districts for more than two centuries. The trail thus combines a specified distance with a distinctive historical feature of the landscape.
The Hüttersdorf Nordic Walking Park has easy, moderate and difficult routes measuring 4, 5.5 and 9 kilometres. Signs at the starting points provide information about the routes, while elevation profiles show uphill and downhill sections. You can therefore take into account the stated difficulty, as well as the distance and elevation profile, when choosing a route. The figures refer to different route options, not walking times.
The trails can be distinguished by their specific features: the Bach- und Burrenpfad is designated as a 13-kilometre premium hiking trail; at the Nordic Walking Park, you can choose from three difficulty levels and routes ranging from 4 to 9 kilometres. The Hüttersdorf Circular Trail, meanwhile, runs partly along paved paths through the protected wetland habitat. This information can help you decide in advance whether distance, elevation profile or the landscape is the main consideration for your outing.
Churches and Local History
The parish of Kreuzerhöhung Hüttersdorf is documented as far back as around the year 700. The church building was constructed in 1958/59 to the plans and under the direction of architect Hans Geimer; it was consecrated on 8 November 1959. The parish’s early history and the construction of the church building thus mark different periods.
The Marienkapelle Hüttersdorf also commemorates a specific historical event. It was built in 1948 in the Old Cemetery as a gesture of gratitude that Hüttersdorf had been largely spared during the Second World War. Its altarpiece was created by local artist Nikolaus Wilhelm. The chapel stands on the Nachtrech, the prominent hill where the first Hüttersdorf parish church was built.
For visitors interested in local history, the two churches offer different points of connection: on the one hand, the parish’s long-documented history and the church’s construction; on the other, the origins of the Marienkapelle and its connection to the Nachtrech. This presents the history as more than just a single building or period.
The Sodixpfädchen Trail
The Sodixpfädchen Trail was inaugurated on 29 October 2024. At the time of its inauguration, it was about one kilometre long and easy to walk; it ran between the Sodix-Hütte hut and the Wiesenersch Kreuz in the direction of Galgenberg in Hüttersdorf Forest. At the time, the trail included several stations, benches, information boards and lifelike animal sculptures. They were intended for movement and rest, as well as for listening to and observing nature and the forest. If you are planning to visit the Sodixpfädchen Trail, check its current accessibility and facilities before setting out.
