More than 140 kilometres of cycling routes, themed hiking trails and historic buildings reflecting different periods make Rehlingen-Siersburg a destination for active exploration and cultural discovery. The landscape stretches from the Saar across the Nied valley and the Gau to the French border. You can shape your stay around your own interests: by bike, on foot or exploring the history of individual places.

Landscape between the Saar and Nied

The hiking landscape around the Nied and Saar includes valley floors, wooded hills and cultivated uplands. The Nied also contributes to the area’s natural character: the river has good water quality and flows through a largely unspoilt river landscape. It provides good living conditions for many fish species, and fishing is also associated with the Nied. The river and its wider surroundings offer recreational opportunities, although activities on the water are subject to specific rules.

Hiking trails and cycling routes

Four themed hiking trails are named: the Panorama Trail, Ammonite Trail, Gau-Niedtal Trail and Bat Trail. You can also choose a route based on information about its length and difficulty. The Druidenpfad in Niedaltdorf, about six kilometres long, is a family-friendly premium hiking route. It leads to a reconstructed Celtic farmstead and a Celtic burial mound.

The Idesbachpfad in Itzbach is about 18 kilometres long and includes sections that challenge experienced hikers. It is considerably longer than the Druidenpfad, which is around six kilometres long; some of its sections are also expressly described as challenging. This information helps you distinguish between the two routes in terms of length and stated difficulty.

More than 140 kilometres of cycling routes are spread across five tours, including cross-border routes to France. Options are available for beginners, experienced cyclists, mountain bikers and leisure cyclists. This provides a range of cycling styles, though not every tour is intended for all groups.

The Nied and paddling rules

If you are planning a paddling trip, take the applicable restrictions into account: small, non-motorised watercraft are prohibited on the Nied every year from 15 March to 30 June. There is also a ban when the water level at Niedaltdorf is below 30 centimetres. Check the regulations and water level before your trip. This will help you distinguish the seasonal closure from the additional restriction during low water.

Buildings and history

The buildings are spread across several districts and each has its own character. The castle near the Saar in Rehlingen is associated with the noble von Hausen family. In Siersdorf, St. Willibrord’s Chapel is designated an important historic monument; in Itzbach, the parish church and castle are similarly recognised.

Fremersdorf Castle is a Baroque complex built around an inner courtyard from 1775 onwards. Siersberg Castle represents a different historical period: its surviving keep dates from the 14th century and stands just under 14 metres high. From the tower, visitors can look out over the Saar and Nied valleys and see the Lorraine hills to the west. The construction period, surviving structure and views each offer a distinct reason to explore local history.

Check visitor information

During the 2026 season, visits to the Niedaltdorf stalactite cave are possible only as part of a guided tour. Advance online booking is requested; walk-in visits can generally not be accommodated. Check visitor information before your trip.
