Selters (Westerwald) offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: trails in and around the town, and church and regional history. The four individually named trails range from 3 km to around 10 km; the Verbandsgemeinde area also has additional, sometimes longer routes.
Hiking Trails in and around Selters
The trails differ both in length and route: the Oasenweg is 3 km long, the El1 runs 6 km along the Saynbach, and the Qu1 runs 8 km through the Oberwald. The S2 is a circular route of around 10 km around Selters. The Wacht above Selters is also a destination for walks. So, alongside the individual trails, there is also a named place for a walk.
The VG Selters Nordic walking park offers another option. Its routes include the Seenplatte, Postweiherrunde, Laurentiusweg, Saynbach/Holzbach, Im Oberwald and Saynbachweg. They range from 5.25 km to 18.61 km, with shorter connecting routes also available. These park routes cover the VG Selters area and should be distinguished from the individual trails in or around Selters, as they form a larger regional network of routes.
Churches and History in the Town
The Evangelical Church in Selters is distinctly Neoclassical in style and was consecrated in 1842. Its two side wings were built as schools and are still used by the local municipality. The church is a listed historic building. Its architecture, former use as a school, and current municipal use come together in a single building.
St. Bonifatius Church also offers a unique perspective on the town’s history: its choir windows draw on the theme of the Revelation of John. The present-day church replaced a Neo-Gothic church that was demolished in 1965. The MUSE is located in rooms at the Oberwaldschule Selters and explores rural life in the Westerwald, past and present. Religious imagery and regional everyday history thus complement the architecture of the Evangelical Church.
Scenery and Excursions around Selters
The Westerwälder Seenplatte is located near Selters. This nature reserve comprises seven lakes and extends to the Saynbach valley. An extensive network of hiking and cycling trails provides access to the seven ponds. The lake district therefore offers a distinct landscape theme alongside trails that start in or around Selters.
Burg Grenzau is also located near Selters. It is said to be the only castle in Germany with a triangular keep. From there, views extend across the wooded Brextal valley and the historic half-timbered village of Grenzau. The keep, valley and village give this destination a different focus from the hiking trails and churches in town.
More to Explore in the Wider Westerwald Destination
Beyond Selters, the wider Westerwald destination offers further inspiration. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometer long-distance hiking trail with 16 stages. It is worth checking the current route planner before setting out. This long-distance trail is on a different scale from the shorter routes in and around Selters.
In the Westerwald, the Stöffel-Park covers around 140 hectares and combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature on the site of a former basalt quarry. The TERTIÄRUM features fossils, including the Stöffel mouse, which document around 25 million years of geological history. The Keramikmuseum Westerwald focuses on the history of working with clay; the objects on display usually originate from a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative themselves in the well-equipped museum workshop, under expert guidance. Check the current workshop program and booking conditions before your trip.
