Oberhaid combines old mills and a distinctive judicial past with two different route options: the RB8 circular hiking trail and the Kannenbäckerland Tour, which includes a stop at Brunnenplatz. This mix helps you choose how to explore the village based on your interests: local history, hiking or cycling can shape your stay.

History Between the Court and the Mills

From 1376 to 1560, Oberhaid was the seat of a special Haiderbach court. From 1450, the Lords of Isenburg had an estate in Oberhaid. An oil mill was built here in 1700 and later became known as Fuchsmühle. Together, these milestones span the period from the historic court to the mill built in the 18th century.

Fuchsmühle and Mausmühle are among the old mills within Oberhaid’s municipal area. Fuchsmühle is linked to the oil mill built in 1700; both mills are local landmarks in the village’s history. Along with the court and estate, the mills are among the subjects through which Oberhaid can be explored.

The Kannenbäckerland: Plateau, Ridges and Valleys

Oberhaid is one of the municipalities in the Kannenbäckerland. This region is a relatively flat plateau with gentle ridges and deeply incised valleys through which natural streams flow. In the Kannenbäckerland, extensive forests are concentrated on peaks, ridgelines and dry slopes. The landscape therefore cannot be reduced to a flat expanse: ridges, valleys, streams and forested areas all belong to the same regional picture.

Hiking and Cycling: Two Different Scales

The RB8 is a circular hiking trail through the Kannenbäckerland. It starts and ends on Hauptstraße in Oberhaid and is about 10 km long. The route follows the Kleiner Saynbach towards Mausmühle and then continues towards a wooded area. Its approximate total length gives you an idea of the hike; the stream, Mausmühle and the wooded area describe individual sections of the route. Before setting off, check the current route and trail conditions.

For cyclists, the 48 km Kannenbäckerland Tour is another option; it includes a stop at Brunnenplatz in Oberhaid. Compared with the approximately 10 km RB8, it differs both in activity and in scale. You can then decide whether a circular hike or a longer regional bike tour better suits your plans for the day. Here too, check the latest route details before setting off.

The Westerwald as a Broader Travel Framework

The wider Westerwald destination offers other themes that broaden the focus beyond Oberhaid’s local history. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235 km long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald, comprising 16 stages. If you include it in a longer hiking plan, check the current route planner before you leave.

Also within the wider Westerwald destination is Stöffel-Park. The former basalt quarry site, covering around 140 hectares, combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the Stöffel mouse, which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history. These regional examples broaden the Westerwald’s range of themes to include long-distance hiking, industrial heritage and geological history.
