A cycling circuit, certified premium trails and a wide range of cultural attractions give Pirmasens several facets. The Dynamikum circuit is an approximately 25-kilometer bike route starting at the Tourist Information office. Along the way, information panels explain the history of the Mühlentäler and Strecktal valleys. Modern e-bikes are available to rent at the Tourist Information office; please confirm availability before your arrival.

Cycling and Pilgrimage Routes

If you prefer exploring on foot, Pirmasens has the Felsenwald, Hexenklamm and Teufelspfad trails, which are certified premium trails by the German Hiking Institute. Since a certification status can be renewed or expire, it is advisable to check before setting out. Hexenklamm is a rocky gorge on the outskirts of the city. Eroded rock formations and small waterfalls define its character.

The Palatinate Way of St. James also passes through Pirmasens: this approximately 74-kilometer connecting route links its northern and southern branches. A pilgrim stamp point is located at the Pirmasens Tourist Information office in the Rheinberger building. Check in advance for the current visiting arrangements at the stamp point and route details.

Green Spaces, Recreation and Art

The Old Cemetery covers six hectares and combines historic character with green space. Nine works of art stand among old gravestones and mature trees. The former mortuary now houses the Carolinensaal, where chamber concerts and talks are held. The events program may change; check specific dates before your visit.

There is space for soccer, volleyball and badminton at Eisweiher. Next to it is a landscaped green area intended for walks and relaxation. At Strecktal Park, you’ll find a 15-hole disc golf course and outdoor exhibits from the Dynamikum. The geological trail in Strecktal features 25 rock samples from across Rhineland-Palatinate. Some facilities at Strecktal Park may be undergoing maintenance; check their condition before use.

Museums, Chocolate and Regional Cuisine

The interactive Dynamikum Science Center invites visitors to explore its 160 hands-on stations. Forum Alte Post features exhibitions about Heinrich Bürkel and Hugo Ball, as well as changing exhibitions. The Altes Rathaus Museum displays the Wald.Schloss.Schuh collection and Elisabeth Emmler’s paper-cutting cabinet. The Westwall Museum is located in the former Gerstfeldhöhe fortification in Niedersimten.

WAWI Schokowelt offers a chocolate-making operation behind glass, a small museum, a café and direct sales. Pirmasens has a wide-ranging food scene, from Palatinate forest huts to upscale restaurants. This lets you focus your plans on different interests—such as culture, a glimpse of chocolate production or regional cuisine.

A Regional Perspective on the SĂĽdwestpfalz

Beyond Pirmasens, the Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the SĂĽdwestpfalz region. Well-developed and marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past Bunter sandstone cliffs. One distinctive landmark in the SĂĽdwestpfalz is the Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal: the rock formation is 14 meters high and is considered a popular excursion destination. These regional landscape impressions complement the green spaces and trails in Pirmasens without replacing them.
