A cactus garden at the edge of the forest, information boards about the Westwall and a circular trail that can start at the railway station: Steinfeld offers several starting points for a stay. You can tailor your plans to your interest in plants, local history or exercise.

Cactus garden and guided visits

The Steinfeld Cactus Garden is just outside the village, at the edge of the forest. It features more than 1,000 cactus species and 600 other succulent plants; these figures may change. Admission is free, and access is step-free. Check the visiting conditions before you travel, as access arrangements may change.

Guided tours about cacti, succulents and aloes are available for groups of 5 to 35 people. A tour lasts about 60 minutes. If you plan to visit, check booking conditions and availability in advance.

Hiking and cycling routes

The Steinfeld Westwall circular trail passes through scenic parts of the municipality. The route includes 24 information boards at 22 locations and also covers other historical events and periods. The Verbandsgemeinde hiking trail also passes through Steinfeld. The BienwaldmĂĽhle circular trail can start at the railway station, pass the cactus garden and swimming pool, and then head into Steinfeld. Check current trail conditions before setting out on this circular route.

The current swimming pool opened in May 1982. The Bienwald Forest, close to Steinfeld, offers a contrast with its mixed woodland and flat paths, making it a place to enjoy nature. For cycling, there is a route that goes directly through the village and a nearby alternative: the 139-kilometre Kraut und Rübenweg passes through Steinfeld. The 57-kilometre Deutsch-französischer Pamina-Radweg Lautertal is close to the village; 18 kilometres of its route are in France. This gives you a choice between a route through Steinfeld and a regional route that includes a section in France.

Church history and the Blueberry Festival

St Leodegar is the patron saint of the church in Steinfeld; its dedication is said to date back to the 7th or 8th century. The traditional Blueberry Festival is an annual fixture: it takes place on the first weekend in July and includes the crowning of a blueberry princess. Check the exact dates and programme for each year.

Getting here and finding your way around

Steinfeld railway station is on the Weißenburg–Winden railway line. The nearest train and bus stops to the cactus garden are about 1.5 kilometres away. Check timetables, connections and stop locations before travelling. If you want to start a hike at the railway station, the Bienwaldmühle circular trail offers a specific starting point.
