Nußdorf brings together a variety of cultural experiences: at the Protestant Church of St. John, medieval furnishings and a Roman four-god stone are the main attractions; the Peasants’ War House combines architectural history with three named museum areas. There is also a historic walking trail, a wine experience trail with sound sculptures and seasonal art, and a route offering views of several landscapes. When making your choice, it is helpful to distinguish between local history, outdoor art and landscape views.

Church and Roman four-god stone

The Protestant Church of St. John in Nußdorf dates back to 1280. Its furnishings include an early Gothic altar and medieval wall paintings. A Roman four-god stone, depicting Jupiter, Hercules, Minerva and Juno, is built into the outside of the church at its northeastern corner. The same church thus brings together medieval elements and a Roman motif. If you are interested in architecture and ancient imagery, this combination offers a striking way to explore local history without limiting the view to a single era.

Architectural history and remembrance of 1525

The Peasants’ War House offers another perspective on Nußdorf’s past. This surviving half-timbered house was built as a residence around 1500 and reconstructed in the half-timbered style on its historic foundations in 1671/1672. The dates refer to different phases of construction: the original building and its later reconstruction. Its museum floor includes the Pastor Lehmann Room, the Peasants’ War Museum and the Nußdorf Village Museum. Guided tours can be booked. If you would like to include the museum’s themes in your stay, you can consider a guided tour as a separate option.

Another point of interest is the approximately two-metre-high bronze Peasants’ War monument at the corner of Kirchstraße and Walsheimer Straße. It commemorates the beginning of the Palatinate Peasants’ War in Nußdorf in 1525. Unlike the architectural history of the house, it focuses on a specific event: the monument keeps the memory of the Peasants’ War alive.

Local history on a walking tour

The historic village walk in Nußdorf follows a circular route with explanatory signs tracing the village’s history. This lets you encounter local history along the way, while the Peasants’ War House brings together three named areas on its museum floor. If you prefer to explore history along a walking route, the village walk offers a different approach from the museum rooms and the guided tours that can be booked there.

Sound, art and landscape views

The Landau-Nußdorf wine experience trail has its own focus. Permanently installed sound sculptures invite visitors to play them; there are also seasonal open-air exhibitions by various artists. The permanent sculptures and changing exhibitions thus offer two different points of interest: sound and outdoor art, complemented by seasonal changes in exhibition themes.

If you would rather prioritise landscape views when making your choice, the “Around Nußdorf” route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Odenwald, Kraichgau and Black Forest. This makes it easy to choose between a trail featuring sound sculptures and changing art, and a route with views of three named landscapes, depending on your interests.

Wine as an occasion for events

The “Night of the Open Cellars” took place in Nußdorf on 2 October 2025. From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., visitors could sample around 120 different wines from the village directly in the cellars or pressing houses of the participating wineries. This example illustrates a specific event format centred on Nußdorf wine: tastings took place on the premises of the participating wineries. The stated times and selection apply to this event.
