A circular route of about one hour and longer tours of up to around two and a half hours give Hümmerich’s hiking options a clear range. Hümmerich is located in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park in Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition to the trails, the forest nature trail, traces of early mining and the Little Weighing Scales Museum are among the features that distinguish the village. When choosing a tour, it is worth considering the route, elevation gain and approximate walking time together.

Choose Circular Routes by Time and Elevation Gain

The circular hiking trails in Hümmerich, marked HÜ1 to HÜ6, are signposted. Four of them offer different time and distance profiles. They all start at the hiking parking area at the entrance to Hümmerich on Bismarckstraße:

  • The Sonnenweg (HÜ1): 5.2 km, 183 metres of elevation gain and about 1.5 hours of walking.
  • The Fockenbachweg (HÜ3): 8.1 km, 309 metres of elevation gain and about 2.5 hours of walking.
  • To the Weißer Stein natural monument (HÜ4): 5.9 km, 253 metres of elevation gain and about 2 hours of walking.
  • The Badeweg (HÜ6): 3.3 km, 120 metres of elevation gain and about 1 hour of walking.

The Badeweg is the shortest of the four routes in terms of distance, elevation gain and walking time. The Fockenbachweg is at the opposite end, with the highest figures in each category. The Sonnenweg and the route to the Weißer Stein natural monument fall between the two. This means you can choose a route based on more than just its distance: the stated elevation gain and approximate duration also help you pick a tour that fits the time you have available.

Discover Forest, Nature and Mining

The 7 km forest nature trail provides information about forests, nature and mining. It offers a thematic experience that goes beyond comparing route lengths and elevation gains. If you are interested in these topics, you can focus on the trail’s content when planning your visit.

Another route, about 7.7 km long, leads from the entrance to Hümmerich down into the valley to ore fields and mine entrances. The route description includes distant views of the Cologne Bay, a stretch along the Gierender Bach through meadow valleys, and the return to Hümmerich. Its described scenery and mining themes set it apart from the four circular routes, for which specific distances, elevation gains and walking times are provided.

Local History Between Mining and Agriculture

The mining theme can also be explored in Hümmerich away from the routes. In the local area, along the path behind Karlshof to the Weiße Steine, are fields of mining pits with visible traces of early mining. While the forest nature trail provides information about mining, the fields of pits show visible traces of this history.

The Little Weighing Scales Museum in Hümmerich offers a different historical perspective. It covers village objects as well as flax and dairy farming, and is housed in Hümmerich’s former fire station. Many historical exhibits can be seen there. Thus, alongside forest and mining, the local offering also highlights objects and economic activities from village life.

Visitor Facilities in the Area

The Hümmerich Traffic and Beautification Association looks after benches, shelters and signposts in and around Hümmerich and along the circular hiking trails. The areas and facilities it also maintains include the forest nature trail, the Weighing Scales Museum and the charcoal kiln. When planning a trip, you can sort the options by different interests: a shorter or longer route, forest and nature topics, traces of mining, or village and agricultural history.
