Neustadt an der Weinstraße combines cultural and urban history with Palatinate wine and opportunities for outdoor activities. Notable attractions include the Collegiate Church, the exhibitions at Hambach Castle, the historic old town and the Keschdeweg. This makes it easy to tailor a stay to different interests, such as architecture and history, the history of democracy, or walking and cycling routes.

City History and Hambach Castle

A guided tour of the old town takes you through its historic streets, with winding lanes, picturesque half-timbered houses, ornate fountains, the Collegiate Church and the historic market square. The late Gothic Collegiate Church, with its imposing twin towers, is a landmark of Neustadt an der Weinstraße. It is considered the largest and most artistically valuable Gothic church in the Palatinate. The 14-ton Kaiserglocke hangs in the north tower and is considered the world’s largest ringable cast-steel bell.

The museum at Villa Böhm offers another way to explore the city’s history: nine rooms on the ground floor take visitors through almost 800 years of Neustadt an der Weinstraße’s past. Two exhibitions at Hambach Castle offer their own perspectives. The exhibition area “Farbe bekennen!” invites visitors to participate, vote and comment. Topics include freedom of opinion, freedom of the press, black, red and gold, and Europe. The exhibition “Hinauf, hinauf zum Schloss!” explains why Hambach Castle is considered the cradle of German democracy. Exhibits and interactive stations also present the events surrounding the Hambach Festival of 27 May 1832.

Excursions from Neustadt

Bus route 502 runs from the main station to Hambach Castle every half hour. From the “Schloss” stop, it is about 400 metres uphill to the entrance. As this is specific timetable information, it is advisable to check the connection before travelling.

Another option is a trip on the historic Kuckucksbähnel railway. The heritage railway departs from Neustadt an der Weinstraße main station, travels via Lambrecht into the Elmstein Valley and reaches Elmstein after a total journey time of 1 hour and 15 minutes. It then returns to Neustadt. The route and journey time provide a clear framework for this excursion, which has a different destination from the bus service to Hambach Castle.

Explore the Old Town and Its Routes

There is an accessible sightseeing route through the historic old town. The pedestrian wayfinding system enables people with mobility impairments and families with pushchairs to explore the old town without barriers. As the route may change, it is advisable to check it before your visit.

There are also different ways to explore by bike: easy cycling tours around Neustadt lead to the wine villages, while mountain bike trails are available for more challenging rides. The approximately 60-kilometre-long Palatinate Keschdeweg runs from Neustadt an der Weinstraße to Hauenstein. Sweet chestnut trees line the route and drop their fruit in autumn. This gives the route a different focus from the cycling tours: its length, the two endpoints and its seasonal connection with chestnuts all shape the experience.

Palatinate Cuisine and Wine

The culinary offerings in Neustadt an der Weinstraße include regional Palatinate specialities, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Wine taverns, seasonal wine taverns and wine festivals add to the selection. When planning, you can consider culture, outdoor activities and wine as separate interests rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary: the city offers specific themes for a stay, without requiring every trip to include the same stops.
