Lasserg can be explored in different ways, depending on your interests: Bischofstein Castle offers a glimpse into a long history of construction, the chapel in the town centre adds a cultural touch, and from Küppchen you can look out towards the castle and the Moselle Valley. Route 2 and the Traumpfad Laysteig add a cycling route and a hiking route to the castle. When planning, you can weigh up history, views and activities rather than combining everything into a fixed itinerary.

The History of Bischofstein Castle

Bischofstein Castle in Münstermaifeld-Lasserg was built in the second half of the 12th century. After suffering damage at the end of the 17th century, it was rebuilt between 1930 and 1933. Visits must be arranged in advance. If you plan to visit the castle, arrange your visit beforehand.

Chapel, Views and Trails

The chapel, dedicated to Saint Benedict, is in the town centre and is well worth a visit. From the so-called “Küppchen” in Lasserg, you can enjoy a view of Bischofstein Castle and the Moselle Valley. The chapel is a destination in town; Küppchen offers views of the castle and valley.

The approximately 35-kilometre-long Route 2 passes through Lasserg and leads to the Lasserger Küppchen viewpoint. You can hike from Lasserg to Bischofstein Castle via the Traumpfad Laysteig. The two routes therefore differ both in how you travel and in their stated destinations: the cycling route leads to Küppchen, while the Traumpfad leads to the castle. Check trail conditions before hiking, as they may change.

More Destinations in the Wider Münstermaifeld Area

The wider Münstermaifeld area has its own cultural highlights. The Collegiate Church of St. Martin and St. Severus is the church of the former collegiate foundation of the same name. The Maifeld Archaeological Museum in Münstermaifeld presents the permanent exhibition “Wealth. Power. Salvation of Souls”. It is located in the vaulted cellar beneath the Tourist Information office, in the former provost’s residence on Münsterplatz. The Münstermaifeld Local History and Experience Museum comprises additional museum rooms in Münstermaifeld, including a historic forge.

A historic town walk takes you past Münstermaifeld’s main sights on a stroll lasting just under an hour. A smartphone-based town walk lets you explore 31 sights in Münstermaifeld. If you are mainly looking to gauge the duration, the historic walk is described as taking just under an hour; for the smartphone-based format, the number of sights is the specific point of reference.

The Maifeld cycling and walking trail is also part of the wider Münstermaifeld area. It follows a nearly flat, disused railway line between Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen, and also serves as a sculpture trail, with artworks forming an open-air museum in the landscape. The cycling routes described therefore differ in character: Route 2 passes through Lasserg to Küppchen and is about 35 kilometres long; the former railway line and the artworks define the Maifeld cycling and walking trail.
