Gappenach’s event highlights include popular carnival sessions and a traditional two-day Christmas market. If you want to plan a trip around a specific occasion, you can choose between these local events; the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination also offers cultural sites with different focuses. If you want to time your visit to coincide with a session or the market, check the relevant event dates before booking.

Carnival and Christmas Market in Gappenach

The popular carnival sessions are part of the Gappenacher Karneval association. The Gappenach men’s ballet regularly performs there and is known for its acrobatics. The traditional Christmas market lasts two days. This gives you a choice of different types of events when planning: carnival sessions or a visit to the market. Specific dates are more important than a general overview of the two events when deciding when to travel.

A Historic Hiking Day

The town’s event history also includes a look back: On May 1, 2015, several hundred people hiked from mill to mill in splendid weather. Gappenach had invited them to mark its 800th anniversary. The date makes this hiking day a specific historical event. It adds a look at a past occasion to today’s event highlights, but is not itself a current date to plan a trip around.

Culture in the Wider Mayen-Koblenz Destination

Genovevaburg is one of Mayen’s landmarks. Archbishop Heinrich von Finstingen of Trier had it built in 1280. Sayn Abbey tells a story from another historical period: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. The abbey’s exterior paintings, dating from around 1255, are considered the best-preserved examples from the High Middle Ages in Germany. The castle, abbey, and paintings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the history and architecture of the wider destination.

Sayner Hütte is a site of industrial heritage. It is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations invite visitors to explore; Sayner Hütte also offers guided tours and creative workshops. In Bendorf and the surrounding area, Hein’s Mill also tells the story of milling: it is the only one of the 20 mills there that is still fully operational. The Mill Museum displays and explains the stages of the milling process and the importance of the miller’s craft in the region.

In Bendorf, the Protestant and Catholic churches of St. Medard are housed under one roof and connected by the so-called Ecumenical Gate. At the New Museum at Sayn Castle, Prince Alexander and Princess Gabriela give visitors a private glimpse into the life of their aristocratic family. The museum also includes a children’s area where historical costumes can be tried on. The church and museum thus offer a different focus from Genovevaburg or the industrial heritage sites.

Landscape and Other Highlights

Sayn Palace Park was laid out from 1840 to 1850 on the commission of Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn. The architect Carl Friedrich Thelemann designed it in the style of an English landscape garden. Its features include a palace pond with a fountain, winding paths, numerous benches, and secluded quiet spots. The park’s history and individual features offer a different way to experience the culture of the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination than museums, churches, or historic sites.

Volcanism and cycling are also regional highlights. The Lava-Dome in Mendig is Germany’s volcano museum. The Geyser Museum explains how the world’s highest cold-water geyser works across five exhibition areas. For a cycling route, there is the 33-kilometer Vulkanpark Cycle Route: it runs from Mayen via Mendig, Kretz, and Plaidt to Andernach, linking numerous Vulkanpark attractions. The route is described as relaxed and family-friendly. Together, these examples show the range of themes in the wider destination, while the carnival and Christmas market are specific events in Gappenach.
