A chapel with several phases of construction, wooden sculptures among the trees and a partially exposed quarry: Ditscheid offers tangible ways to combine local history with outdoor discoveries. SteinbĂĽchel Landscape Park also features a Cretan labyrinth made from native red beeches and play areas for children.

St. Apollonia: Building History and Community Life

A small wayside shrine was first built on the site of today’s St. Apollonia Chapel in 1663. A small chapel followed in 1756; the present chapel was built in 1849. This sequence makes the site’s different phases of construction easy to trace. The name Apollonia also features in local history beyond the chapel: in 1994, the boards of the local associations at the time joined with the municipal council under the name “Apollonia Association” to focus on beautifying the village. The “Winter Fair” was revived as a fundraiser on the feast day of St. Apollonia, February 9. The chapel, association and fair thus each highlight a different aspect: the building’s history, community-led village improvements and a festive occasion.

Discover SteinbĂĽchel Landscape Park

Wooden sculptures created at several events by chainsaw carvers are scattered throughout the landscape park, with some tucked away out of sight. This distribution makes them a different experience from a single display piece: as you look around the park, you may spot more works along the way. The old quarry has been partially reopened and can be visited. The Cretan labyrinth made from native red beeches adds its own distinctive design feature. There are play areas for children in the park. In this way, the landscape park brings together several different themes rather than focusing on just one attraction.

Getting Around and Practical Details

The “XXL Swing Bench” is located near the Ditscheid sports field and about a ten-minute walk from Steinbüchel Landscape Park. The bench offers a particularly lovely spot to enjoy the first rays of spring sunshine. This seasonal view complements the local history and park attractions. The landscape park also has a barbecue hut with water, electricity and toilet facilities.

The Wider Region: Mayen-Koblenz

The wider travel destination of Mayen-Koblenz includes other cultural attractions in their own right. Genoveva Castle in Mayen was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, its modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also offered. Sayn Abbey was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Its exterior paintings, dating from around 1255, are considered the best-preserved of the High Middle Ages in Germany. These examples from Mayen-Koblenz add distinct themes of castle, industrial and abbey history to the picture of Ditscheid.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Ditscheid, choose your focus based on the local attractions: would you like to learn about the chapel’s history and community life, or focus mainly on the various discoveries in the landscape park?
