Nature and Trails in Boos
The Booser Doppelmaar Nature Reserve shapes Boos’s connection with nature: As a Volcano Park station, it is home to a diverse range of animal and plant life. Nature is therefore a central theme in Boos, complemented by several named hiking trails and regular activities organized by the local NABU group. When planning an overnight stay, you can first consider whether the Doppelmaar and hiking should be your main focus, or whether you would also like to explore cultural attractions across the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination. When choosing a route, you can take into account its starting point, whether it is a circular trail, and the destinations mentioned.
The Traumpfad Booser Doppelmaartour starts at the hiking car park at the “Booser Doppelmaar” Volcano Park station. The Kratertour and the Stumpfarmweg are circular hiking trails that pass the Boos Eifel Tower and the two Boos maars. The Eifelturmpfad Boos is another named hiking trail. The starting point is specified for the Doppelmaartour; for the Kratertour and Stumpfarmweg, the focus is on their circular routes and shared landmarks.
Eifel Tower and Nature Tours
The Boos Eifel Tower is currently closed. The approximately 25-meter-high wooden tower stands on the 557-meter-high Schneeberg at the edge of the Booser Maar Nature Reserve. Its features include an observation platform with panoramic views across the Eifel landscape and its extinct volcanic cones, as far as the Westerwald and HunsrĂĽck. Check its opening status before a future visit.
The local NABU group regularly organizes excursions for citizens interested in natural history and offers tours for school classes. Organized nature education and hiking trails therefore offer different experiences. If you are planning to join an excursion, check the group’s current schedule in advance.
More to Explore Across the Mayen-Koblenz Destination
The wider Mayen-Koblenz destination also offers cultural attractions, which are distinct from Boos’s nature and hiking features. Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. In Mendig, the Lava-Dome is the German Volcano Museum. The Geysir Museum explains in five exhibition areas how the world’s highest cold-water geyser works. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also on offer. Sayn Abbey offers a medieval perspective: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Exterior paintings from around 1255 are considered the best-preserved examples from the High Middle Ages in Germany. As a separate regional offering, the 33-kilometer Vulkanpark cycle route runs from Mayen via Mendig, Kretz, and Plaidt to Andernach. Mayen-Koblenz therefore offers a range of themes to choose from, including a castle, volcano interpretation, industrial heritage, monastic history, and a cycling route.
