In Sayn, industrial and aristocratic heritage meet hiking trails through forests and countryside. When planning your trip, you have a simple choice: would you like to focus mainly on cultural sights, spend more time on the trails, or combine both? The attractions and routes offer different highlights, without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring.

Culture and History in Sayn

Visitor attractions in Sayn include Sayn Foundry, Sayn Castle with the New Museum, the Butterfly Garden, the Princely Castle Park, Sayn Castle ruins, Sayn Abbey, Hein’s Mill, the Limes Roman Tower and Sayn Climbing Forest. This selection brings together an industrial monument and aristocratic history with museum and landscape themes.

The New Museum is located in Sayn Castle. It presents aspects of the history and private life of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn family; it also includes a richly coloured chapel. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the castle with an insight into family history and sacred design. Opening hours and access arrangements may vary at individual attractions; check details before your planned visit.

Two Trails with Different Highlights

The Saynsteig is a long-distance hiking trail that leads through shady forests and along natural paths to rocky cliffs and viewpoints looking towards the Rhine Valley and the Eifel. Forest, rock and distant views define the character of this trail. The Sayner Aussichten route first passes Sayn Castle ruins, Sayn Castle and Sayn Abbey, then leads into the Brexbach Valley and crosses Pulverberg. On this route, the historical landmarks come at the beginning of the described trail, before it continues into the valley and landscape section.

To choose between the two routes, you can consider these differences: the Saynsteig combines forest and rocky landscapes with views towards two regions; Sayner Aussichten includes the castle ruins, castle and abbey in its route description, as well as the Brexbach Valley and Pulverberg. These features do not specify a walking time or difficulty level. Check trail conditions locally before setting off.

Bendorf: Industrial Heritage, Park and Views

Beyond Sayn, it is worth considering Bendorf as a wider travel destination. Sayn Foundry is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and is considered the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to have received this distinction. Following careful restoration, it offers modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations; their content may evolve. The accessible circular tour of the foundry grounds starts at the visitor centre in Sayn Foundry’s former machine factory, dating from 1909.

Sayn Castle Park also offers its own historical landscape highlight: it was designed between 1840 and 1850 in the style of an English landscape garden. Features of the park include a castle pond with a fountain, a bridge over the pond with a distinctive rustic wooden railing, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded quiet spots. This design gives the park a different focus from the industrial sites and hiking trails.

The 800-year-old ancestral castle of the Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn stands high above Sayn, near Bendorf on the Rhine. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Westerwald hills, the Rhine Plain and the volcanic mountains of the Eifel. Sayn Abbey adds to this historical context: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202.

More Attractions and Practical Information

On Pulverberg in Bendorf-Sayn, there is a Limes discovery centre featuring a listed reconstruction of a Roman watchtower from 1912, as well as an embankment and palisades. At the Roman tower, trained Limes Cicerones offer staged tours and hikes about the Limes and Roman history for all age groups; availability may vary.

From the Butterfly Garden and Sayn Castle, the castle ruins can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes via the premium hiking trails Rheinsteig, Saynsteig and Sayner Aussichten. In addition to exotic butterflies, the garden is home to button quail, tortoises, tropical finches and Japanese koi. A ticket to the Butterfly Garden also gives you the option of visiting the New Museum, directly adjacent in Sayn Castle. Check the ticket arrangements before your trip.

Since 2020, the Tourist Information Office has been located in the Sayn Foundry visitor centre and provides support with planning and organising holidays and day trips to Bendorf and the surrounding area. Culture lovers, hikers and visitors interested in Roman history will find a range of ways to make the most of their stay.
