The Sörgenloch hiking trail gives your stay a specific focus: the circular route is about 8 kilometres long and includes around 200 metres of elevation gain. These two approximate figures can help you plan how the hike will fit into your stay.

Waypoints and vineyard views

Along the way, the trail passes the historic pilgrimage church, the local “castle” and the Jewish cemetery. There are also benches and two playgrounds along the route. At the same time, views open up over the hills of Rheinhessen, shaped here by vineyards, fields and wind turbines. Historic vineyard and roadside crosses line the trail. This brings scenic views and specific historical landmarks together on the same route.

The Wingertshäuschen on the hiking trail

Right beside the hiking trail is the Wingertshäuschen, a rest stop high among the vineyards southeast of the village. From there, you can look out over the hills of Rheinhessen. A concrete path leads to the hut from the southern edge of the village; it is also accessible to people using mobility aids. Built in 2024, the building provides a convenient place to rest along the way. Check its condition and access on site before planning your visit.

Landscape in the wider Mainz-Bingen travel destination

The southern part of Mainz-Bingen district is characterised by the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, special crops of fruit and vegetables, including asparagus, and extensive vineyards producing Rheinhessen wine. This regional context adds to the Sörgenloch loop’s landscape perspective, without equating features of the district with individual stops on the local hiking trail.

More trails in the wider Mainz-Bingen travel destination

The Binger Wald adventure trail is a 4.5-kilometre circular route. A much longer option is the approximately 75-kilometre Rheinterrassenweg, which runs from Worms to Mainz. Oppenheim and Bodenheim are stages in the valley and make it easier to access the Rhine Terrace. The Rhine Cycle Route is a separate cycling route that runs for around 90 kilometres through the Rheinhessen region, from Bingen am Rhein to Worms. The routes therefore differ both in length and in activity: from a short circular walk to a longer hike and a regional cycling route.

Cultural sites in the wider Mainz-Bingen travel destination

In Ingelheim, the permanent exhibition at the Museum bei der Kaiserpfalz covers the period from the Stone Age to the High Middle Ages. The Imperial Palace of Ingelheim has a floor plan unique to the Early Middle Ages, incorporating elements of Roman villa and palace architecture. A signposted self-guided tour with an accompanying booklet takes visitors to historically interesting sites.

The Museum am Strom in Bingen has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Hildegard of Bingen. It also displays the 66-piece Bingen medical instrument set: the working tools of a Roman doctor from the 2nd century. The wider travel destination thus offers a variety of cultural and historical themes, from an exhibition spanning a broad period to a specific Roman artefact.
