Schwedelbach combines hiking trails with a protected natural landscape and sites commemorating the Bachbahn railway. When planning your trip, you can choose between circular hikes, a visit to the sand pit and insights into local railway history. Practical points of reference on site also include parking, a cycle path and a place to stop for a meal.

Hiking Trails and Local Points of Reference

The Sandhasenweg is a 9.2-kilometre circular hiking trail around Schwedelbach. The Pletschmühlweg is 8.2 kilometres long and loops around Schwedelbach and Pörrbach. Along the way, it offers a Kneipp pool and viewpoints. Schwedelbach also provides direct access to the Pfälzer Musikantenweg and the Schwedelbacher Wanderrunde. This gives you a choice of different routes: a loop around the village, a trail around two villages, and access to other named hiking trails.

Parking for the Sandhasenweg is available at Schwedelbach village square, on Hohlstraße and at the village entrance, by the roundabout on the K 13. As practical details can change, it is a good idea to check shortly before your visit. If you would like to plan a break with a regional flavour, Pörrbacher Hof in Schwedelbach’s Pörrbach district serves Palatinate specialities. The dining options may change; check before you arrive.

Sand Pit and Bachbahn Memorial Site

The Schwedelbach sand pit has been a protected nature area since 1979. The former sand pit on Heidenberg was used for sand extraction; today, the area provides a quiet habitat for amphibians, rare plants and bird species associated with wetlands. The sand pit can be viewed year-round from a viewing platform with an information board. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

There are two different points of reference for finding your way along the Pfälzer Land cycle path: the Bachbahn memorial site is right on the cycle path, while the sand pit can be reached from there after about 100 metres.

The Bachbahn memorial site provides information about the former railway line from LampertsmĂĽhle-Otterbach to Reichenbach. It was officially opened in 2018 with an information board about the history of the railway line. Near the former Schwedelbach station, a cast-iron replica of a steam locomotive has stood on original Bachbahn railway sleepers since 2012. The board and the locomotive replica focus on different things: one tells the story of the line, while the other serves as a memorial at the former station.

More Places to Visit in the Wider Kaiserslautern Destination

Places in other towns within the wider Kaiserslautern destination complement Schwedelbach’s attractions. In Mehlingen, the Mehlinger Heide is considered the largest heathland area in southern Germany. There is an approximately 1.5-kilometre heathland discovery trail with information boards and stops; the heathland is also connected to the Palatinate Forest hiking trail network. Guided tours are available at any time. Check trail and tour information when planning your visit.

The region also has places to visit for a cultural focus: the abbey church in Otterberg dates back to the 12th century and is considered a monumental masterpiece of early Gothic architecture. In Landstuhl, Nanstein Castle is a landmark of the Sickingen town, with views stretching across the West Palatinate. Both places broaden the cultural and historical perspective on the wider destination without replacing Schwedelbach’s own Bachbahn memorial site.
