The Mehlinger Heide is one of the largest heathland landscapes in southern Germany and gives Mehlingen a clear focus for nature outings and hiking. Options range from a short interpretive trail to considerably longer hikes. The typical flowering season and a historic site in Mehlingen can also help you decide when to visit and what to focus on.

Heather in bloom and trails in the Mehlinger Heide

The heathland itself covers about 150 hectares. It contains a circular hiking trail of about 3.5 kilometers. The Heideerlebnispfad (Heathland Discovery Trail) is around 1.5 kilometers long, making it about two kilometers shorter; information boards and stations make it a themed alternative. The trail features a “green classroom,” a scent-learning area, and an insect hotel. Those who choose the trail pass information features along a shorter route; the circular hiking trail is the longer option.

Heather typically begins to bloom in late July, reaches its peak in August, and gradually fades in September. The timing may vary from year to year. If the bloom determines when you travel, August is the typical peak; late July and September mark the beginning and end of the season, respectively.

Hiking routes with different time commitments

The Hochfelsweg starts at the Mehlinger Heide parking lot. It is 12 kilometers long, has 250 meters of elevation gain, and has a stated walking time of about 3 hours and 45 minutes. It runs mostly through the forest and leads to several stone arrangements believed to date from the Bronze or Stone Age, the stone avenue on Meisenberg, various menhirs, and the Hochfels. Old paved paths are also part of the route.

The Sonnwendweg starts at the Mehlingen sports center. Its nine kilometers include 70 meters of elevation gain and a stated walking time of about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Compared directly with the Hochfelsweg, it is three kilometers shorter, has 180 meters less elevation gain, and has a stated walking time that is about an hour shorter. This gives you two clearly measured hiking options with different distances and time commitments.

The Mehlinger Heide is also connected to the Palatinate Forest hiking network. The “Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen” (“Mysterious Signs of Time”) hiking network was established in 2008, covers a total of 60 kilometers, and links more than 50 stations; Mehlingen is one of the participating municipalities. The 60 kilometers refer to the total length of the network, not to the length of an individual trail in Mehlingen.

Jewish history in Mehlingen

The Jewish cemetery in Mehlingen offers a distinct historical focus. It was established around 1800 and covers approximately 1,700 square meters. There are still 194 gravestones there; most date from the 19th century. The cemetery is a registered cultural monument, is part of the monument zone of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and is under special protection. As an important monument to the region’s Jewish history, it connects the cemetery itself with a broader historical context.
