The springs in Springental, the mushroom-shaped Münchhofer Fels and a mural in the town center give Hochspeyer a range of distinctive features. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hochspeyer, you can tailor your stay to your interests: exploring trails, enjoying natural and geological features, or discovering history and art. Local highlights range from marked circular routes to the town’s first documented mention in 1195.

Things to do: trails and activities

The Hochspeyer singletrack course offers experienced riders natural-surface trails with tight turns, steps, steep descents and a slalom section. Trail conditions can change, so it’s worth checking the latest conditions before setting out.

Marked circular routes for Nordic walking are available in Hochspeyer. Smartphone-guided hiking trails start right in town. The “Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen” (“Mysterious Marks of Time”) walking routes, Mönchhofsweg I and Mönchhofsweg II, also start in town; check local availability before planning a specific outing.

The similar-sounding names refer to different routes: Mönchhofsweg I and II are part of “Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen” and start in Hochspeyer; the Mönchsweg routes in the surrounding area pass Roman and early modern sites.

Hochspeyer also has a Swin golf course. Check its current operating arrangements before your visit. You can also swim at the local swimming pool; seasonal opening may apply. Check in advance whether the pool will be open on the date of your visit.

Gathering places and art

The multigenerational garden in the center is a public meeting place for residents and visitors. A boules court nearby offers a place to play boules. The garden and court provide two different ways to enjoy the town center: a place to meet and a dedicated space for a game of boules.

Carl Kenz’s large-scale mural “Energie” (“Energy”), created in 2020, is on the transformer station in Wiesenstraße in the town center.

Landscape and history

Numerous springs rise on both sides of the valley in Springental. MĂĽnchhofer Fels is a mushroom-shaped rock formation with a stone slab measuring about twelve meters in diameter. The Hochspeyer chronicle describes the rock as a place of historical interest.

The town’s history also has some specific dates. Hochspeyer was first mentioned in a document from Otterberg Abbey in 1195. The demarcated district of Münchhof is older than Hochspeyer and belonged to Otterberg Abbey until 1564; farming and sheep rearing took place there. The dates have different significance: 1195 marks the town’s first documented mention, while 1564 marks the end of Münchhof’s affiliation with the abbey.
