Orenhofen combines marked hiking trails with architectural and historical traces from different periods. On your trip, you can focus separately on outdoor activities and local history: the O2 circular trail leads through Orenhofen Forest, while St. Rochus Church and archaeological finds offer a different perspective on the area.

Hiking in Orenhofen: Trails with Their Own Wayfinding

Orenhofen offers marked hiking trails. One option is the O2 circular trail through Orenhofen Forest. It runs mostly along well-maintained paths. In addition to the signposts, GPS navigation or a hiking map is recommended for the O2 route. This gives you an additional way to navigate rather than relying solely on the signs. As trail infrastructure and routes may change, check the latest information before setting out.

From Orenhofen, you can reach the surrounding forests and neighbouring villages on foot or by bicycle via well-maintained hiking and farm roads. Schönfelder Hof can be reached via the cycle and hiking path along State Road 2. Trail conditions and access arrangements may change; check these details before your trip.

St. Rochus and Orenhofen’s Architectural History

St. Rochus Church is a Neo-Gothic hall church built of red sandstone blocks, constructed in 1876/77. It features wall paintings, retaining walls and a flight of steps. The Klais organ was built in 1907 and remains in its original condition. The church also houses an 18th-century statue of St. Roch, depicting the saint with a staff and a dog. The construction date, organ and statue each add a distinct historical layer to the church’s furnishings.

The former girls’ school also dates from 1876/77. It is one of Orenhofen’s listed buildings and is constructed of yellow and red sandstone blocks. The two buildings from the same period represent different building types: a hall church and a former school. A wayside chapel at the junction of Kapellenstraße and Zemmerer Straße adds to the area’s architectural history. It probably dates from the 18th or early 19th century; the niche cross may date back to the 16th century.

Traces of History from the Stone Age to the 20th Century

Orenhofen’s archaeological finds span the Stone Age, Roman period and Frankish period. During Roman times, pottery workshops operated in Orenhofen; finds of pottery shards are a reminder of this activity. Much later, a pipe kiln in Orenhofen produced clay pipes until the first half of the 20th century. The excavation of a Frankish burial ground is also among the area’s attractions. A war memorial dating from 1968/69 stands in Orenhofen cemetery.

Rochus Festival and Rochus Fair

The annual Rochus Festival is celebrated on 16 August, followed by the Rochus Fair on the next Sunday. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the dates and programme in advance, as annual event arrangements may change.
