The 50th parallel runs through Rittersdorf along PrĂĽmer StraĂźe, where it is marked and signposted. The village offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your visit: the pilgrimage tradition associated with Bildchen, Rittersdorf Water Castle, and circular routes of different lengths and types. Rittersdorf is part of the Southern Eifel Nature Park. To choose how to spend your time here, consider two questions: Would you like to explore architectural and local history, or spend time on a longer hike?

Pilgrimage, Chapel and Castle

Bildchen has been a place of pilgrimage since the 18th century. The current pilgrimage chapel was rebuilt in 1908/10 and renovated in 1982. The tradition and the building’s history therefore date from different periods: the pilgrimage tradition goes back to the 18th century, while the current chapel dates from the early 20th century.

In the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, the approximately 700-year-old Rittersdorf Water Castle has remained almost unchanged since it was built. It offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle houses a restaurant and a small local history museum. Check before your visit whether both are currently open. Rittersdorf Castle regularly provides the setting for medieval banquets; check the dates in advance. Civil wedding ceremonies are also held in the Knights’ Hall. Contact the local authority to confirm current arrangements.

Two Circular Routes with Different Profiles

Nature Park Hiking Trail 79 is a moderately difficult 11.7-kilometer circular hike. The start and finish are at the parking lot by Rittersdorf Castle; check current parking conditions before setting out. The route crosses uplands and the Bitburger Gutland. From Waxweiler Straße, a staircase leads to Trail 79, which passes St. Martin’s parish church. In the section through the Bitburger Gutland, the landscape is shaped by wide fields, meadows and scattered fruit trees. Panoramic views over fields, forests, valleys and hills open up repeatedly; Bitburg is visible on the horizon. There are several places to stop for refreshments along the route. Check their opening hours in advance.

The Rittersdorf Fitness Trail offers a different loop: it is approximately seven kilometers long and designed for walking and running. Along the way, you’ll find fitness equipment, wave-shaped loungers and viewpoints. The starting point is also Rittersdorf Castle; parking is available there, and an orientation map is located by the playground. The distance is approximate; check the signs and current recreational facilities on site. When comparing the routes, consider both the distance and what each is designed for: Trail 79 is designated as a moderately difficult hike, while the shorter fitness trail combines walking and running with exercise equipment and wave-shaped loungers.

More Cultural Highlights in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm

To explore beyond Rittersdorf, the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers other distinctive cultural attractions. At the Devonium in Waxweiler, visitors can learn about paleontology and fossil life in an engaging way. A one-hour tour of the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine takes you through the mine and explores ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. A mining trail with numerous information boards also covers the area’s mining history. Check the current seasonal visitor information before visiting the mine.
