In Mauel, historic details in the Prüm Valley meet hiking trails along the Prüm and Dierbach rivers. To the west of the village, the Urmauel area lies on a terrace in the Prüm Valley and is designated as a monument zone. This gives visitors two distinct points of interest to explore: the village’s architectural styles and trails that follow different routes through the valley.

Monument Zone and Historic Details

The Urmauel monument zone includes two Streckhöfe (linear farmsteads). At Dorfstraße 31 in Mauel, there is a former house entrance with a Baroque portal and skylight dating from 1795. North of Mauel, on the road to Waxweiler, stands a tall post cross in the post-Baroque style, dating from 1847. The monument description thus covers both a designated zone with two farm complexes and individual architectural features with clearly specified forms and dates.

The features also differ in their style: the portal is Baroque, while the post cross is post-Baroque. Visitors interested in architectural history will find both an ensemble and individual historic forms in Mauel. Dorfstraße and the road to Waxweiler help distinguish the locations of the buildings mentioned.

Hiking Trails along the Prüm and Dierbach

The Islek Pfädchen – Dierbachtal near Mauel is an easy circular trail along the Dierbach, through natural vegetation and a secluded landscape. Above the Prüm, the trail first follows a rock face to the Mauelermühle mill, then returns through Mauel in the Prüm Valley. At the Mauelermühle, it crosses the Prüm; on the way back, there are views of the wooded slopes along the river.

The first section of the Islek Pfädchen also follows the Willibrordusweg and Hiking Trail No. 21 in the Southern Eifel Nature Park. A section in the Dierbachtal also forms part of the Devon Trail route in the NaturWanderPark delux. The route description thus links a loop through the Prüm Valley with named trail sections and landscape features. The Dierbachtal trail leads from the bridge near Mauel into the Dierbachtal.

The route is a useful way to choose between the trails: the Islek Pfädchen is described as passing a rock face and the Mauelermühle, crossing the Prüm, and returning through Mauel. The Dierbachtal trail’s route, as its name suggests, leads from the bridge into the Dierbachtal. Before setting out, check which route suits the time you have planned for your visit.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

There is parking right at the starting point at the hiking car park by the bridge before Mauel. Picnic spots are located at the Mauelermühle and at the starting point by the Prüm. Check local conditions before your trip if you plan to use these parking and picnic facilities.

Mauel has no direct rail connection; the nearest station is in Bitburg-Erdorf. Check current train and bus connections before travelling. By car, the recommended route is via Waxweiler and Trierer Straße; Waxweiler is about 4 km from Mauel. As road conditions and signage can change, it is a good idea to check the information before setting off.
