The Church of the Visitation of Mary was consecrated in 1502; pilgrim routes also converge in Klausen. For travel planning, the town offers a mix of sacred art, historical traces and routes for walking or cycling.

Pilgrimage Church, Art and Monastery Library

The 6.20-metre-high Antwerp altarpiece dates from around 1480 and depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ. The church’s Chapel of Grace dates back to the 15th century and was remodelled in 1902. The Rieger organ also has specific historical details: it has 39 stops across three manuals and one pedal.

The monastery library was built at the end of the 15th century above the sacristy of the pilgrimage church. Its collection includes a late-medieval manuscript and early printed works known as incunabula. Guided visits to the library and pilgrimage church can be booked through the Catholic parish office. Check booking options before your trip.

The Abbot’s Garden adds another historical point of interest: it was redesigned in 1769 with a garden pavilion on three terraces; the pavilion was restored in 1990. The two dates mark different stages in the site’s history, from its design to the pavilion’s restoration.

Pilgrim Routes and Walking Tours

The Eifel Camino passes through Klausen and joins the Moselle Camino at the foot of the Church of the Visitation of Mary. The Moselle Camino runs for around 180 kilometres from Koblenz-Stolzenfels to Trier, passing through Klausen and Krames. If you are travelling along one of these routes, check the signage and possible detours in advance.

For a shorter walk, the central Klausen Circular Route offers a different time frame: it takes about 15 to 20 minutes and starts at the Marienbrunnen fountain. A visit to the church is not included in this walking tour duration. The walking tour in the district of Krames takes about 60 to 90 minutes and also starts at the Marienbrunnen, in front of the pilgrimage church. This gives you two different duration estimates for walking tours around the town.

Views, Nature and Cycling

The Klausenkreuz viewpoint offers views over the Wittlich Depression and the Voreifel region. In clear conditions, the view extends as far as the Volcanic Eifel. For another walking option, the Pohlbach walk leads to a nature trail with two sections. The Klausen forestry district offers guided tours on request; check in advance whether a tour is available on your chosen date.

There is also a cycling connection: Klausen is linked to the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route via the Pilgrimage Loop. The 55-kilometre cycle route runs between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues, away from road traffic, and has a maximum gradient of 3 percent. Check for temporary detours before setting off.

Krames Country House and Oven Festival

A building of the Trier country-house type is part of the Krames walking tour. In this type of building, the living quarters, stable and barn are all under one roof. This example shows how different uses were combined in a single building.

Krames is also home to a restored bread oven, which is the focus of the recurring Oven Festival in early September. Traditional toppings are served on oven-baked bread, along with local Viez cider. As dates and arrangements should be checked, find out about the latest festival plans before your trip.

Getting Around the Wittlich Region

Klausen is connected to the Wittlich region by VRT bus routes 321 and 322. As timetables can change, check the connection for your travel date before setting off. This lets you plan around the visits, walking tours or a cycling leg that matter most to you.
