Discover Enkirch through two complementary perspectives: the town’s architectural history and the surrounding landscape on its trails. Half-timbered houses shape the townscape, while hiking and cycling routes explore the banks of the Moselle, vineyards and higher elevations. Depending on whether you are more interested in historical details or outdoor activities, you can choose a different focus for your trip.

Half-Timbered Houses and Church Architecture

More than 30 half-timbered houses have been preserved in Enkirch; most date from the 17th century. The oldest documented half-timbered building in the town is in the Heimatstuben Museum and is dated to around 1395. The considerable time gap between this example and the predominantly younger buildings reflects different historical phases of construction. Historic wine, monastery and noble estates are marked with Hellerkunst signs that explain their architectural history to visitors. The Moselsteig also presents Enkirch as a wine-growing town with many half-timbered houses.

The Protestant Church adds another chapter to the town’s history: over more than 800 years, it has been repeatedly rebuilt, extended and altered. As a fortified church, it has two loopholes at ground-floor level in the tower. The Stumm organ was built between 1754 and 1761. The building can therefore be viewed from two distinct perspectives: its defensive function and its musical history.

On Foot Through the Town and Countryside

The Enkircher Gäßchen-Rundweg leads through hidden corners, over historic cobblestones, along paths and stairways, and through old firebreaks. It focuses on the town itself; by contrast, the network of more than 90 kilometres of marked hiking trails offers a range of landscapes. The routes run along the Moselle, through vineyards, over the Moselle heights and through stream valleys with old mills. You can choose between exploring details of the town and hiking through varied landscapes.

Cycling Routes, Wine and Arriving by Motorhome

Cycling routes follow the banks of the Moselle, pass through vineyards and go by villages. Hiking also takes you over the Moselle heights and through stream valleys with old mills; by bike, you can also choose routes that pass by villages. The Moselsteig describes Enkirch as a wine-growing town with many half-timbered houses, bringing its landscape and architectural heritage together.

Depending on your plans, you can take part in a wine experience in the vineyard and earn a Wingertsdiplom (vineyard diploma).

Motorhome travellers will find a campsite right on the Moselle, with space for around 200 motorhomes. As capacity may change, check the latest details before your trip.
