The Roman wine press in the Erdener Treppchen was discovered and excavated during land consolidation work. The Roman wine press can be visited year-round; guided tours are available by arrangement. This makes it possible to include a specific cultural destination in your plans, while a guided tour should be arranged separately.

Village History and the History of Winegrowing

Erden’s townscape is shaped by half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, winding lanes and picturesque courtyards. Another local feature is the Treppchenblickbrunnen: it is fed by spring water that flows into a nearby biotope.

The village church was completed in 1720. Its stone high altar retable, dating from 1654, is considered an early Baroque work of art. The retable is therefore 66 years older than the completion of the church—a striking contrast in time between the artwork and the building’s history.

A chapel preserves wall paintings depicting scenes from the martyrdoms of Thyrsus and Boniface. It is a stop for pilgrims and hikers travelling along the Moselle or around Erden. There is also a restored tree press on Hermann Schwaab Platz. Its pressing technique was already used in Roman times.

Vineyards and Trails Around Erden

The Erdener Kletterweg (Erden Climbing Trail) runs through the Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat vineyards. It features climbing sections with views across the Moselle Valley. In the Erdener Treppchen, vines grow on steep slate slopes opposite Erden, so the trail also passes through the wine-growing landscape. Check local conditions before setting out.

The climbing trail borders breeding grounds for eagle owls and kestrels. The area is considered the northernmost range of the rock bunting; opportunities to observe birds may vary by season. In addition to the trail and landscape, visitors interested in nature can also enjoy this seasonal aspect.

Two stages of the Moselsteig Trail are near Erden. A signposted connecting trail from the Erden–Lösnich bridge leads through the Erdener Treppchen and connects the village with the Moselsteig. The bridge between Erden and Lösnich also provides access to the opposite bank of the Moselle. Walks and hikes from Erden lead through the vineyards and up to the heights above the Moselle.

A Stay with Different Areas of Focus

The Campingschänke at Erden campsite is right on the banks of the Moselle and serves regional dishes and Moselle wine. As dining options may change, it is advisable to check whether the Campingschänke is open before visiting.

Planning therefore involves a few different considerations: the Roman wine press can be visited year-round, while guided tours are available by arrangement; local conditions should be checked before using the climbing trail. Cultural stops in the village, the wine-growing landscape and hiking trails offer different ways to tailor your stay to your interests.
