There are many ways to explore Wissen: take a year-round accessible walking path along the Sieg, go on challenging hikes or follow guided routes to churches and chapels. You can also discover traces of mining, as well as civic and religious landmarks in the town centre. This gives you specific options to consider when choosing where to stay, rather than a single standard itinerary.

Hikes between the Sieg, forests and meadows

The Sieg promenade is a year-round accessible walking path along the Sieg, where you can spot grey herons. During high water, path conditions and access may temporarily change. For a longer outing, the challenging circular hike “Natursteig Sieg | Stage 10 | Around Wissen” is a different proposition: it is 24.97 kilometres long and starts and ends at Wissen railway station. Its route follows paths through fields, forests and meadows, passes through idyllic stream valleys and offers sweeping views. As route details may be revised, check the current tour description before setting out.

The Auenland Trail winds through woodland and meadows, follows the Firzelsbach stream and includes paths above the Sieg. For a shorter option, the Köttingsbach tree trail introduces 22 trees along around 500 metres of hiking path in Wissen. The trails therefore differ not only in their scenery, but also in what you can focus on along the way.

Cycling routes from Wissen also lead into the surrounding area. The Nister-Flitzer cycle tour from Wissen follows the Nister to the Weltendepfad, passes through the Kroppacher Schweiz and includes a suspension bridge in Helmeroth. The Stille Post cycle tour follows a former mining railway line through an area shaped by its iron ore mining past. No distances are given here for these two tours; their appeal lies in the landscapes and mining heritage described for each.

Churches, chapels and local history

The surviving decoration in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross is considered Peter Hecker’s largest surviving work. The church’s oldest inventory item is a baptismal font dating from the 13th century. The Heister Chapel also has a special historical connection: built in 1714, it is considered one of the oldest half-timbered chapels in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The guided chapel trail offers a specific way to link these places with Schönstein Castle. The tour is about four kilometres long, takes around two and a half hours and starts at the Tourist Information Office in Wissen RegioBahnhof. It leads to Schönstein Castle, its castle chapel and the Heister Chapel. Both chapels can only be accessed as part of the guided chapel trail. Schönstein Castle is inhabited, and its interior cannot be visited. Compared with the challenging circular hike of almost 25 kilometres, the chapel trail is much shorter and has a stated duration.

Another guided option is the roughly two-hour walking tour through Wissen. It also starts at the Tourist Information Office in Wissen RegioBahnhof. Stops include kulturWERKwissen, a former mining industrial site now used for art and culture, as well as the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, Marktstube, Steinbuschanlage, the directors’ villas, Germania Hotel and Gerichtsstraße. The tour places the town’s industrial history alongside religious and civic landmarks. This gives it a different focus from the chapel trail: here, local history takes centre stage, while the chapel trail leads to the castle and chapels.

Getting here and other things to do

Wissen RegioBahnhof is designated as an award-winning hiking station and connects several hiking options with public transport. Individual train services may change, so check the timetable for your travel dates. This lets you coordinate your choice of hike with your travel plans without relying on any specific service.

As a complement to walking trails and sightseeing, Siegtalbad has indoor and outdoor pools, a diving tower, a 60-metre waterslide, a heated outdoor pool and a large sunbathing lawn. Facilities also include various types of sauna, relaxation areas, a whirlpool and a wellness area. Facilities may change, so check the current offerings before visiting.

The different time commitments offer a practical guide when deciding whether Wissen is right for your stay: the walking tour takes about two hours, the chapel trail around two and a half hours, while the challenging circular hike covers 24.97 kilometres. If you are mainly interested in historic landmarks, you can choose between two guided tours with different focuses. For nature and hiking, there is also the Sieg promenade, other hiking trails and cycling routes.
